Thanks to Super Mario 3D All-Stars, players are being reintroduced to a trio of critically-acclaimed Super Mario games. The graphics have improved on all three games, and the gameplay remains largely unchanged, for better or worse.
For players new to any of the games, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is likely bringing them to some unexpected conclusions. Sunshine has not been met as favorably by critics as it once was, and there are some things about Mario 64 that people may have forgotten. Among these is the fact that there are a trio of secret switches in the game. Each of these switches is necessary to unlock some of the game's many secrets. None are particularly easy in their own right, so here's how to unlock Mario 64's Green Switch.
Step 1 - The Caves
Deep under Peach's castle, in the narrow catacombs, lies the entrance to the Hazy Maze Cave. The entrance can specifically be found past an unmarked door with a star on it. There's a great big pool with what looks like liquid metal in it. This is not the portal to the Mario 64/Doom crossover mod, despite how scary it looks. After jumping in, players will find themselves in the Maze.
Step 2 - The Lake
As its name suggests, the Hazy Maze Cave is a maze of a cave. There are maps on the walls to help guide the player, but it can still be difficult to traverse. No matter the star they are trying to collect initially, players should make their way to the underground lake. Be sure to watch out for Swoops (the bats) on the way there, as they're some of the most annoying enemies in Mario 64. Located in its own area within the cave, the lake has a pleisiosaur like creature named Dorrie swimming around in it.
Step 3 - The Secret Tunnel
Get onto Dorrie give his back a ground pound. Dorrie will lower his head, allowing the player to climb on. From there, the player can steer Dorrie to a small patch of ground in front of double doors. Go through the doors and into another liquid metal pool. The player will start as Metal Mario, and have to get past a pair of Snufits and through a tunnel of water. The water has a strong current that only Metal Mario can resist, so move fast. At the end is the Green ! Switch.
What This Does
Pressing the switch unlocks the metal cap to be used in other levels. It makes Mario heavy and invincible, plus able to walk and breathe underwater. This makes exploring areas like Jolly Roger Bay for Plunder in the Sunken Ship a bit easier.
