While playing Super Mario 64, one gamer finally managed to grab a 1-Up Mushroom that was thought to be impossible to obtain without dying. Super Mario 64 has been around for more than 26 years, but this recent achievement from a dedicated fan reveals that the game still provides challenges to players.

Among the challenges that players have been attempting to complete in Super Mario 64 is the “Impossible 1-Up.” While there are 1-Up Mushrooms found throughout the game, there is one located in the Cool, Cool Mountain course that is particularly hard to get it. Specifically, this 1-Up is in the slide portion of the level, but it clips out of the tunnel before Mario can reach it while sliding. Even though players had previously figured out how to grab the 1-Up, they had to die in order to get it. However, one ingenious player has found a solution to this problem.

In a recent YouTube video, a speedrunner called PaLiX shared that they had discovered a way to grab the “Impossible 1-Up” on Cool, Cool Mountain in Super Mario 64. Fortunately, the YouTube video revealed the process PaLiX undertook to nab the troublesome item. It’s worth noting that the speedrunner said the method used to acquire the green mushroom took several hours. With this in mind, other gamers wanting to try and grab the “Impossible 1-Up” will need to be prepared to work at it for a long time.

The video began with PaLiX briefly jumping outside the confines of the map to drop to a lower part of the level. The rest of the clip largely consisted of the speedrunner wall jumping from one side of the room to the other repeatedly. It should be noted that this was done as part of a TAS (tool-assisted speedrun). After doing this for a while, Mario suddenly stopped moving next to the entrance to the slide portion of the course. The character was then lifted upwards before teleporting back inside the tunnel, claiming the 1-Up Mushroom in the process.

Unsurprisingly, this clip showing how PaLiX managed to get the “Impossible 1-Up” has caught the attention of numerous Nintendo fans on YouTube. Since posting the clip several days ago, the post has received thousands of views and hundreds of likes. Among those commenting, some said they wondered why there was a 1-Up Mushroom in that spot when it could not be reached without TAS. In addition, others commented that they were unaware that the 1-Up even existed inside the level.

It is interesting to see the lengths players will go to discover everything that a game like Super Mario 64 has to offer. Time will tell what other seemingly impossible challenges speedrunners such as PaLiX will take on next.

Super Mario 64 was released in 1996 for the Nintendo 64.
