In a recent announcement that may disappoint fans of the classic JRPG series, Konami has revealed that the Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster is being delayed past the end of the year. The franchise first launched on the original PlayStation back in 1995, and has since seen four sequels and numerous spinoffs. After all these years, the series still has a loyal fan base and Suikoden 2 ranks among the best Konami games for the PS1. So, it's not surprising that many gamers have been looking forward to a remaster of the first couple titles.

The remastered games were announced last year and, in early 2023, Konami showed off gameplay clips for Suikoden 1 and 2. The titles were never given a definitive release date but, from the first reveal, developer and publisher Konami consistently stated that it was planning for a 2023 release. Now, it seems that these plans have changed.

In an August 29 announcement, posted both on Twitter and the game's official website, Konami explained to fans that the remasters of Suikoden 1 and 2 are being delayed. The message was brief and relatively light on details, saying simply that the decision had been made "to ensure the quality performance and gameplay experience" met Konami's standards. While praising the work of the development team, Konami emphasized that it would need a little more time to get everything right for release.

The announcement was also lacking in concrete information about a new launch date. It's clear that gamers won't be getting Suikoden 1 and 2 this year, but there's no indication of when Konami is planning on releasing it, or if it even has a new date in mind yet. The message did promise that more details would be coming in the future but, for now, fans will be left to speculate.

This news will be sure to frustrate some eager fans, but it's also quite understandable. The games in the series are massive, with two Suikoden games making the list of longest Konami games ever. Updating all of that content from the days of the PS1 and bringing them to HD quality is likely a massive undertaking and, even with a dedicated team, could take longer than initially intended.

JRPG fans will be waiting a while longer, it seems, to reexperience a pair of classics, and they'll surely be watching for more updates in the future. Fortunately, there are plenty of JRPGs to check out while waiting for Suikoden 1 and 2. With a little patience and help from some other classics, gamers should be able to hold out until Konami finally delivers.

Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster will be releasing for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One and currently has no release date.
