The very first, long-awaited The Suicide Squad trailer has dropped and it is explosive. The three-minute trailer for the highly-anticipated DC Extended Universe movie was released by Warner Bros. on their official Twitter channel, after director James Gunn teased its arrival for almost a day. The video introduces fans to the new group of supervillains, who seem to be “dying to save the world”. And if the trailer is anything to go by, there will be a lot of bloodshed to get there.

Within the first few seconds of the trailer, it is established that the film will be full of action and some dark humor, with several sarcastic one-liners showing up in typical Gunn style. Additionally, the amount of gore in the red-banded trailer confirms that the movie will not be holding back on violence. In December, it was confirmed that The Suicide Squad will have an R-Rating, which has had fans excited as a team of supervillains aren’t expected to be the kindest.

The trailer introduces fans to the new supervillains that will be joining the team in Gunn’s edition of The Suicide Squad. While John Cena's Peacemaker and Idris Elba's Bloodsport are the main new characters, some of the other confirmed characters include Savant, Weasel, Polka-Dot Man, and a kaiju, who DC fans will recognize as Starro from the comics. Apart from the trailer, an official poster for the film was also released by Gunn, which seems to put Bloodsport in charge of the team.

Viola Davis' Amanda Waller is back to marshal the team of anti-heroes and is willing to grant 10 years off their sentence if they “successfully complete the mission”. It remains to be seen what the members of the Suicide Squad will be up against this time.

Gunn began creating the hype on Twitter by announcing on Thursday that the trailer would be released the next day. The director then continued teasing fans the next morning by releasing official character posters for some of the new supervillains that he will be introducing to the world. Each art shared on Twitter had a personalized note from Gunn, but was originally shared by the actor playing the specific role. This made it obvious that the entire team was in on the trailer release, and would be teasing fans for a while before allowing them to feast their eyes on the much-awaited video.

In a tweet, the director refers to Bloodsport as the role he specifically wrote for Elba, who he claims to have never met before The Suicide Squad. In the DC comics, Bloodsport appears as the contract killer hired to kill Superman. When Elba was first brought on board, fans assumed he would be taking over the role of Deadshot, which was portrayed by Will Smith in the 2016 version of the film. They weren’t totally off the mark, as news reports did suggest that Elba first met Gunn to replace Smith.

It has been previously confirmed that Gunn's The Suicide Squad is not entirely a sequel to David Ayer's version of the film released in 2016, but works like a soft-reboot that may take the franchise in a new direction. While some of the characters will be returning, including Harley Quinn and Waller, most of the main supervillains joining the force are new characters introduced by Gunn.

Specific plot details were kept under wraps for a long time, but it was later revealed that the film will focus on a group of inmates at a brutal prison that are ready to sign up for Task Force X, a dangerous group of fighters, in order to leave. The members will include several DC characters, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin, and Harley Quinn. There has been a lot of speculation among fans as to whether the movie will be connected to the DCEU.

The Suicide Squad will premiere on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
