Highlights

  • Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's gameplay and live-service elements have disappointed Arkhamverse fans, making them skeptical about the game's overall quality.
  • Both Gotham Knights and Kill the Justice League reflect the publisher's trend-following approach.
  • Gotham Knights' availability on Game Pass is a hopeful transition that could potentially affect Kill the Justice League's success.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League didn’t do much to impress its community of Arkhamverse fans when it revealed gameplay, whether it looked like a fun multiplayer shooter romp or not, and its live-service elements leak pushed it further from being the game these same fans were hoping it would be. Besides the fact that it does look like players will be constantly firing at hordes of purple aliens and other purple points of interest, though, there’s really no telling what Kill the Justice League will end up playing like until more is revealed. Still, it isn’t painted in a much better light than Gotham Knights was before it launched.

Gotham Knights and Kill the Justice League both come from developers whose seminal work is affiliated with the Arkhamverse, but even though Gotham Knights attempted its own original story, both games are demonstrative of their publisher predicting trends and executing them in ways that fans would eventually dislike. Following Gotham Knights and Kill the Justice League, fans are guaranteed to see more single-player games in development; meanwhile, Gotham Knights has recently packed its bags and moved to Game Pass, which is a decision Kill the Justice League should make, too.

Gotham Knights Came to Game Pass a Little Too Late

Gotham Knights wasn’t a live-service game and its co-op functionality wasn’t what fans had an issue with. That said, Gotham Knights only had two-player co-op at launch and fans had to wait until after its release for four-player co-op to eventually arrive, and its post-launch content was arguably not fulfilling enough to engage players in that mode after all. If Gotham Knights had come to Game Pass around the time of its Heroic Assault mode, there’s no telling how many players it could have amassed on the subscription service between console and PC.

Gotham Knights being available on Game Pass now is great for anyone who refused to purchase it for retail price but still wants to check it out, though players have undoubtedly dwindled since its post-launch content came out and the consensus surrounding the game has not gotten better. Likewise, Gotham Knights still hasn’t implemented full crossplay between all platforms, which could have been profoundly advantageous for its co-op—though some crossplay compatibility does occur between PC and console—and therefore Game Pass subscribers would still be stuck with the pool of players they have on their platform of choice for the most part.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Should Hop to Game Pass Sooner Than Later

If a game isn’t on Game Pass as a day-one inclusion it can board the ship to reinvigorate itself, and while the latter is possible for Gotham Knights, the former is a basket that Kill the Justice League should put all of its eggs into. If Kill the Justice League gets tossed onto Game Pass when it releases in February, many more fans might be willing to check it out if they already have a subscription. This strategy was likely advantageous for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’s own shelf life, and because Kill the Justice League is a full-blown multiplayer shooter unlike Gotham Knights, it could be the perfect way to warmly welcome weary fans to it.

That might not soften the blow entirely if Kill the Justice League still has all of its leaked battle pass and live-service components after the smoke has cleared from its most recent delay. But making it more immediately accessible could help put fans’ guards down until they have played the game themselves and leaped around Metropolis as either Harley Quinn, Deadshot, King Shark, or Captain Boomerang.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League releases on February 2, 2024, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
