The DC universe is a vast one, and most media has barely scratched the surface of the characters and stories it has to offer. Over the last 85 years, DC has cultivated an insurmountable number of unique characters, and while fans will know the Justice League, the Teen Titans, the Suicide Squad, and even the Justice Society of America, there are so many DC characters that even die-hard fans will have forgotten about. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is looking to change that.

While Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's new trailer was fairly divisive, it still had its stand-out moments, and one of those was getting to see the main squad in action. Though Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark have all become much more popular in the last few years, most of them are still relatively unknown characters, and it's great to see them interact not only with each other, but with the wider DC universe as a whole. It seems as though Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League isn't stopping there, with a few more lesser-known DC characters being teased to make an appearance.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Is Making a Smart Move By Introducing More Minor Villains

Debuting in 1959 in The Brave and the Bold, the Suicide Squad has always consisted of lesser-known characters, and that trait has run through the team's entire history. Though the 1980s Suicide Squad had Captain Boomerang and the Joker, it also had members like Thinker 2, Duchess, Doctor Light, and Shade the Changing Man. The 2000s continued the trend with villains like Clock King, Big Sir, and Major Disaster joining the squad. Even the current Suicide Squad run has characters like Major Force and Nocturna on the roster.

Giving these lesser-known villains the spotlight is exactly what the Suicide Squad is about, and it's great to see Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League embrace that. Though Harley Quinn has become a household name, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark are still widely unknown, especially the latter. They've all cropped up in recent DC live-action and animated movies and shows, but Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is finally giving these characters an opportunity to interact with the wider DC world, coming face-to-face with iconic heroes like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League isn't just putting the core team in the spotlight, however. In the most recent trailer for the game, Rocksteady confirmed that a handful of other obscure DC villains will appear in the game, acting as NPC aids to the main squad. The Golden Age Superman villain Toyman will appear as the team's gear manufacturer, able to create helpful traversal and combat tools for each character. Teen Titans villain Gizmo will act as the squad's wheelman, creating elaborate and highly technical vehicles. Hack, the disembodied technopath, will assist the Suicide Squad by providing them with tactical analysis, and by hacking any obstacles in their way.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is putting its titular team in more danger than ever before, going up not only against the Justice League themselves, but also the villain behind their brainwashing, Brainiac. Despite the heightened stakes of the mission, it's great to see Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League including lesser-known villains like Toyman, Gizmo, and Hack, and hopefully there'll be a few more surprise cameos from other obscure characters later down the line.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League launches on May 26, 2023 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
