The release of Rocksteady Studios' Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is just around the corner, and the highly anticipated IP aims to capitalize on the success of the developer's hugely popular Batman: Arkham series, even in the face of some sharp criticism directed at its live-service model. Despite the criticism, however, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League may bring something to the table that will keep players enthralled with its world for months and perhaps years on end. A significant portion of what the game will offer was revealed in a recent Q&A session on Discord between Rocksteady and its fans.

The Discord Q&A, which took place on January 12, was fairly extensive, as Rocksteady disclosed a surprising amount of information regarding Kill the Justice League's revealed characters, story, and mechanics. As such, the developer asked that anyone wishing to avoid spoilers also avoid the conversation, and the same rule still applies. However, some fans may wish to get a sneak peek at what the game will be like, if not just to prepare themselves for what's to come.

Suicide Squad's online requirement for solo players has faced opposition since day one, but a newly revealed feature has added some needed context.

Everything Revealed in the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League January Discord Q&A

Each Task Force X Character Has a Unique Personality and Drive

One of the primary features Rocksteady emphasized during the Q&A was Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's characters that will be playable at launch — Deadshot, Harley Quinn, King Shark, and Captain Boomerang. Each one of these characters has a distinct personality and drive that makes them unique, and players can expect their defining characteristics to play a significant role in the story. In fact, while the characters initially distrust one another, their dynamics evolve as the story progresses, leading to a tight bond between the four of them.

Kill the Justice League's Deadshot is all about getting the job done, so he is very direct and focused. Harley, on the other hand, is as casual as they come, but she's forging her own path and is determined to come out on top no matter what. King Shark is a team player, and he can be a little too trusting at times — a characteristic the rest of the team enjoys taking advantage of. Finally, Captain Boomerang is somewhat clueless but is reluctant to put himself in harm's way on behalf of anyone but himself.

Each Character Occupies Different "Game Spaces" During Combat

Aside from Suicide Squad: Kil the Justice League's story, one of its strongest features is its combat. Every gameplay mechanic hidden in each of the game's playable characters factors into the game's combat in some way, and Rocksteady has even gone so far as to ensure each character's personality plays a part in their approach to combat encounters. As such, each character will occupy a particular "game space" during combat, and every enemy type and encounter was designed with these spaces in mind.

As detailed in an answer on Discord, Deadshot looms over the battlefield, firing at his enemies from a distance and occasionally descending "for a Shield Harvest or Juggle kill." Harley can generally be found in the "mid-height space," swinging around and grappling away when she's in danger. Kill the Justice League's Captain Boomerang is much more close-quarters than the others. Shark, however, occupies multiple spaces, including the "up-close-and-personal" space where Boomerang lives and the mid-height to high spaces where Harley and Deadshot can typically be found.

Players Will Have an Immense Amount of Freedom in Character Customization

As gamers continue requesting deep customization in games, Rocksteady has ensured Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League players will receive that opportunity to the utmost. Every character was designed with the player in mind, so players can customize their characters to suit their playstyle. Specifically, there will be hundreds of possible combinations and permutations for builds across all four characters at launch, and Rocksteady plans to add even more post-launch.

Each character can be equipped with gear, and there are eight loadout slots for players to save their gear combinations. There are four Afflictions (Deep Freeze, Diablo Blaze, Livewire Bolt, and Venom Frenzy), which can be applied to melee weapons and eventually grenades to augment them. Each character also has three unique talent trees that reflect their playstyle, with 10 tiers in each tree.

  • Harley Quinn's talents emphasize her acrobatic nature and love for explosive combat
  • Deadshot's talents center around critical hits and counters
  • King Shark's talents focus on raw power, particularly melee
  • Captain Boomerang's talents serve to make him a well-rounded character

Kill the Justice League's characters have various traversal mechanics as well, along with Traversal Attacks and Suicide Strikes that are unique to them. Finally, they are each proficient in three of the game's six weapon types (Assault Rifles, Pistols, Sniper Rifles, Shotguns, SMGs, and Heavy Weapons).
