Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League hasn't exactly had a smooth development. Between numerous delays and a lukewarm reception to the Sony State of Play footage, the upcoming DC game has more than a few challenges to overcome if it wants to be successful. If Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League were to succeed, however, the publisher already has a perfect spiritual successor.

The first trailer for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was revealed all the way back in 2020 with an unconventional premise. Additional videos and gameplay footage would reveal it to be a multiplayer game, where players can take control of different members of Task Force X. This team was primarily made up of Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark as they try and take down the Justice League controlled by Brainiac. While the game's formula remains in question, the publisher could benefit from using it on another team of characters. That team would be the Creature Commandos.

Who Are the Creature Commandos in the DC Universe?

DC Creature Commandos

In the DC Universe, the Creature Commandos are a team of monsters who work for the United States government. The group is often made up of a creature resembling the Frankenstein monster, a werewolf, a gorgon, and a vampire, along with a human handler. Originally the team fought in World War 2, but modern iterations of the team have appeared in DC Comics as well. Relatively obscure by modern comic standards, the Creature Commandos gained more prominence when they were revealed to be part of the first chapter of James Gunn's new DC Universe.

In October 2022, it was revealed that James Gunn would be running DC films alongside Peter Safran. In January 2023, Gunn revealed the new slate of DC projects, including various television and film projects. The first of these was set to be an animated series based on Creature Commandos which is currently set to be released in 2024. With this new exposure, it would make the team the most obvious successor to the Suicide Squad and could very well make for a fun time.

Why the Creature Commandos Are the Perfect Team to Succeed the Suicide Squad

The enemy designs and gameplay of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League came off as repetitive in previously released footage, and the game's always online live service elements did give cause for some alarm. However, at the very least, the general setup for the game lends itself well to the idea of an ensemble team-based video game with the potential for multiplayer elements. In fact, there is an argument to be made that Creature Commandos could have more variety than a Suicide Squad game ever could.

The Creature Commandos is a team full of different characters who are often themed on monsters. One of the biggest issues with the gameplay footage of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was that it showed most characters shooting people with different types of guns. While the characters were clearly experts in different areas, it did give the combat a sense of repetition that would be difficult to achieve with Creature Commandos. With characters whose abilities range from gunplay and hand-to-hand combat to the abilities of a vampire and werewolves, it could make for a strong ensemble game.

In the end, there is no way to tell how gamers and critics will respond to the upcoming DC video game. Following the State of Play presentation, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was hit with a massive delay and rumors continue to circulate as to why. However, if the game does well, Warner Brother Interactive should look to Creature Commandos for its next big team video game.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is coming out on February 2, 2024, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
