In a surprise move that no one really saw coming, Streets of Rage 4 marks the first entry in the classic Sega Genesis series in 26 years. Originally announced two years ago, development on the anticipated beat-em up is finally at an end and thanks to a brand new trailer, fans now know when they can get their hands on the retro-inspired title. In addition, the trailer also teased the return of a classic mode as well.

The long wait is nearly at an end for Streets of Rage 4 as the latest trailer reveals the game will be digitally arriving on April 30, 2020. Arriving on all major platforms for $24.99, Xbox Game Pass subscribers will also gain access to it upon release there as well. A physical edition is also available, which comes with a steelbook case, reversible game covers and a custom Sega Genesis clam shell case to hold both the steelbook and standard game case.

As shown off in the trailer, Battle Mode is making a return from Streets of Rage 2 and 3. The mode lets up to 4 local players or 2 online players battle it out against one another. Better yet, for longtime fans, the game also comes with unlockable pixel art which makes the characters look as they did back in the games from the early 90s. Retro music tracks can also be unlocked from the first two games in the series.

Co-developed by Dotemu and LizardCube, the pair are also known for other well received remakes like Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap. After collaborating with Sega, the studios then turned to Guard Crush Games to utilize a modified game engine from the Streets of Fury game, another beat-em up inspired by the classic games in the franchise.

Outside of the classic gameplay, music is also another key component of the franchise. Olivier Deriviere, known for work on games like Remember Me, Vampyr, and the Freedom Cry expansion for Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, serves as the main composer and writing the primary themes which dynamically change based on what's happening on screen. The game also has a ton of guess composers for handling boss music including Hideki Naganuma (Jet Set Radio franchise), Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts, Final Fight, and more), Keihi Yamagishi (Ninja Gaiden), Harumi Fujita, and more. Classic Streets of Rage composers Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima are also involved as well.

Streets of Rage 4 launches on April 30, 2020 for the Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
