One of the special attacks in Capcom’s upcoming Street Fighter 6 contains a reference to an iconic scene from Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie. Recently, Street Fighter 6 revealed the last three fighters of the base roster, which includes Zangief, Lily, and Cammy. While Lily is a brand-new fighter, both Zangief and Cammy are popular recurring veterans of the series. Zangief is one of the original eight world warriors from Street Fighter 2, while Cammy was introduced in a later re-release known as Super Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers. Ever since then, Cammy has become an iconic character within the franchise, making her appearance in spin-off media like Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie.The Street Fighter 2 anime movie was the first animated film ever produced for the series, which predates the live-action movie by a couple of months. As such, it’s become a beloved film, with many praising it for how faithful of an adaptation the movie is to the game, where the fluid animation makes each fight scene a highlight. Since the film featured all sixteen fighters from Super Street Fighter 2, one scene with Cammy stood out for its brutality, which is referenced in this game.This can be seen with Cammy’s new Level 2 super art in Street Fighter 6, where after hitting her opponent with a kick, she hangs above her opponent right before snapping their neck, finishing them off by driving their back into her knees. This scene is exactly how she assassinates British Justice Minister Albert Seller in Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie, where she does the exact same moves in the exact same order. Fans gave praise to Capcom for including a special move that is a reference to a beloved piece of Street Fighter 2’s animated history.
Another reference to older Street Fighter spin-off media is Cammy’s new default outfit in this game. Her costume of red boots and black tank top and pants is almost the exact same look she had in the Street Fighter 2 V TV anime, with her new Union Jack-themed jacket being a unique addition. Her new appearance also seems to take cues from other popular characters like Android 18 from Dragon Ball Z and Blue Mary from the Fatal Fury and King of Fighters series.
The rest of Cammy’s moveset has some of her trademark offense that categorizes her as the series’ resident fragile speedster/glass cannon archetype. This includes her iconic moves such as Spiral Arrow being present, with a more realistic and brutal edge to her attacks thanks to Street Fighter 6’s new artstyle. With the launch roster's gameplay previews now fully revealed, fans are excited to try out both the new iterations of these classic world warriors and the newcomers.
