Along with new characters and fighting mechanics, Street Fighter 6 introduces first-hand control settings that allow players to choose between a manual, assisted, or hybrid playstyle. The manual scheme is the familiar 6-key configuration from previous games, while the assisted setting provides a simplified version of that. The hybrid option, however, uses AI to help determine the best combos for players.

Since the AI-assisted controls—the Dynamic type—won’t be available in online modes, Street Fighter 6 players are unsure whether to choose the Modern or Classic control types. To help with that, this guide explains how to choose the best scheme and what to consider before locking in on any of them.

The Best Control Type for Street Fighter 6

Street Fighter 6 Modern Control Scheme

Players looking to land the fastest and most consistent combos should choose the Modern control type. However, those seeking creative attacks and extra-damaging Supers and Specials are better off with the Classic control type.

The primary difference between the Classic and Modern control schemes is the inclusion of an Assist button in the latter. While the Modern setting enables players to execute one-button Special Moves and Super Arts, the Classic scheme retains the 6-key manual configuration.

Things to Consider Before Choosing the Control Type

When choosing between the Modern and Dynamic control settings in Street Fighter 6, some players may struggle to decide which option is best. However, they can determine the most suitable scheme by considering certain factors like character, playstyle, and game mode.

  • Character. For new Street Fighter 6 characters, the Modern control type is the optimal scheme. It helps players unfamiliar with combos by balancing the odds when fighting against established characters.
  • Playstyle. Players prioritizing agility over power will benefit from the Modern control type because it allows for quick, one-button punishments. But those with slow-paced, power-orientated playstyles should definitely go with the Classic scheme.
  • Game Mode. The intensity of a match can also determine the right control type. While the Modern order type works best in friendly matches, the Classic scheme is ideal for tournaments and ranked fights.

Pros and Cons of the Modern Control Type

With Modern controls, players benefit from a shorter reaction time and land faster combinations. However, the downside is that they lose 20% damage in assisted Super Moves and Special Arts and can’t perform some basic grounded and aerial moves.

In the Modern control setting, one button (R2/RB) assists players with combos, Specials, and Supers at the cost of a damage debuff. While this setting offers the advantage of a simplified and swift moveset, it also restricts players to predetermined combos and predictable attacks.

Pros and Cons of the Classic Control Type

As the default control scheme of previous Street Fighter games, the Classic order type allows for creative attacks and full movement control. This, of course, comes at the cost of complicated and unassisted combos with slower reaction times.

With Classic controls, players will need to land combinations using the 6-key manual configuration that revolves around heavy, light, and medium strikes. Moreover, they must rely on manual inputs for different unique moves like Shinku Hadoken, Shin Hashogeki, and Shin Shoryuken.

Who Should Consider the Dynamic Mode?

Because the Dynamic control type is AI-assisted and unavailable in online modes, only players who want to experiment with different characters or those new to fighting games should use it.

The way the Dynamic scheme works is that it limits the attack buttons to B, X, and Y (Square, Cross, and Triangle on PlayStation) and decides the best combos and attacks based on the player’s range and Drive Gauge.

Street Fighter 6 is available now on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
