While Street Fighter is among the longest running and most popular fighting game series, there are only a few mainline entries in the series. 2016's Street Fighter 5 is the current entry, with the latest major update coming in 2020's Street Fighter 5 Champion Edition release. However, Capcom appears to be teasing a major announcement in the near future which may end up being the next main entry in the series - Street Fighter 6.

Street Fighter 5 originally released in 2016 on PC and PlayStation 4, eight years after 2008's Street Fighter 4 and only the second mainline series release since 1997's Street Fighter 3. The game initially released to mixed reviews as both players and critics praised the gameplay but were unhappy with the apparent lack of content and roster of only 16 characters. Subsequent DLC packs, along with the releases of the Arcade Edition and Champions Edition, addressed these criticisms, provided fresh gameplay balancing, and a roster currently boasting 46 fighters.

Rumors of a Street Fighter 6 announcement appeared on Twitter after Capcom posted a countdown timer on its official website. While Capcom provided no clues as to what the timer is for, games industry reporter Jeff Grubb said the timer is likely preceding the fighting game's official reveal. He said on the latest episode of his podcast, GrubbSnax, an insider at Capcom informed him about the impending Street Fighter 6 reveal but did not give any details about a release window or platforms.

Grubb's comments quickly made their way to Twitter, which have been shared repeatedly among Street Fighter players.

If the reaction on Twitter to Grubb's statements is any indiciation, it appears both Street Fighter fans and the greater fighting game community are more than ready for a Street Fighter 6 reveal. Players could argue these reactions reflect a desire for a new, full entry in the series to give it a much-needed shot in the arm after six years of Street Fighter 5.

A valid question many players may have, though, is if Street Fighter 6 will be a console exclusive or release on multiple platforms. The reason for this was Sony securing Street Fighter 5 as a PS4 exclusive, with PC being the only alternate platform to purchase the game on. If Street Fighter 6 were to be a console exclusive, it would not be surprising to see backlash from the Street Fighter community even if the console exclusivity is timed.

Street Fighter 5 is currently available on PC and PlayStation 4.
