Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin could get a sequel, according to producer Tetsuya Nomura. The original game's reception was a mixed bag; the combination Soulslike mechanics with the classic Final Fantasy mythos and setting is compelling on paper, but suffered from several issues that left many fans feeling disappointed. Some of the most common complaints with Final Fantasy Origin were around the one-dimensional and often unlikeable characters, lack of polish, and clumsy dialogue, while most who played it agree that the combat is solid and enjoyable.

Final Fantasy Origin is a combined effort from Koei Tecmo's Team Ninja, who developed the well-respected Nioh franchise, and Square Enix, who holds the rights for the Final Fantasy series. FFO just got its third and final DLC titled Different Future, which was commemorated by an official Square Enix live stream.

Tetsuya Nomura, who worked as the creative director on Stranger of Paradise, spoke about the future of the Final Fantasy spinoff during the Different Future DLC livestream. He acknowledged that there was "a lot" of negative sentiment when FFO launched and discussed the possibility of a sequel by saying it was up to the fans that enjoyed the game and its DLC to "spread the news" and prove that the title resonated with the fandom. Finally, Nomura added that he would love to work with Koei Tecmo's Nobumichi Kumabe (director of Persona 5 Strikers) in the future.

Final Fantasy Origin might not have lived up to the expectations of many who had high hopes for the collaboration between Koei Tecmo and Square Enix, but it could lay the groundwork for a more ambitious and polished entry in the future - the fact that Tetsuya Nomura has appealed to fans and indicated his interest in working on a sequel is certainly promising for those who played FFO and saw the bones of what could be a great Soulslike.

It's unlikely that a Final Fantasy Origin sequel will happen for a few years. Square Enix has some big titles in the works like Kingdom Hearts 4 and Dragon Quest 12 along with some other smaller titles, and Team Ninja likely has its hands full, too, with the upcoming PS5 exclusive Rise of the Ronin. In the immediate future, fans can look forward to Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty from Team Ninja and Final Fantasy 16 later this year from Square Enix.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
