Highlights

  • Stellar Blade, an upcoming PS5 exclusive, features a protagonist based on a real-life Korean model named Shin Jae-eun whose likeness was recaptured through a 3D scanning process.
  • The game has drawn comparisons to Nier Automata due to its soundtrack and combat style. Stellar Blade's release has been delayed to 2024, possibly to optimize for the PS5's capabilities, and the game has garnered attention from industry figures like Yoko Taro.

The developers behind the upcoming Stellar Blade action-adventure PS5 exclusive title revealed the real-life model who was scanned to become the game's protagonist. Stellar Blade was first announced as Project Eve back in 2019, being a multiplatform game that was being developed by Shift Up and was planned to release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. During the September 2022 PlayStation State of Play event, it was re-revealed under its new name and as a PS5 exclusive title.

The announcement trailer for Stellar Blade gave gamers a brief look into its story, combat, and visuals, which were modeled after similar games in the genre. The earliest comparison that gamers drew towards Stellar Blade was with Square Enix and PlatinumGames' collaborative action JRPG, Nier Automata. Many felt the soundtrack and combat were rather reminiscent of one another, especially when both games featured a cybernetic action heroine. Stellar Blade's protagonist, Eve, looks a bit more human and lifelike than 2B thanks to the technology used for the game, as the character is a digital scan of a real-life person.

PS5 Reaches Impressive Sales Milestone

Sony's latest console reaches an impressive sales milestone just before the holidays that establishes how strong the PS5 is holding up after launch.

On the fan-run Twitter account ShiftUpWorld (an account that covers all updates regarding Shift Up's games like Stellar Blade, NIKKE, and Destiny Child), the account shared how Stellar Blade's protagonist was actually based on a full 3D digital scan of a Korean model known as Shin Jae-eun. The account provided evidence of this claim, where it showed the model during a 3D scanning session, along with how she compared to Eve when she was put in the PS5 game.

Characters being digitally modeled after their actors has been a rather popular trend in AAA video games, usually to help accentuate how a character looks. The ability to digitally scan real-life models and other people give these gaming characters a realistic feel. For example, the Like a Dragon franchise features several real-life Wrestlers and famous Japanese actors who were digitally scanned into the game. Fans who saw the video clip complimented just how similar Eve looks to Shin Jae-eun thanks to the digital scans.

While this game was originally slated for a 2023 release, Sony announced that Stellar Blade would be delayed to release sometime in 2024, according to a recent PlayStation blog post. While the reason for this delay is unknown, it's possible that the game is looking to take full advantage of the PS5's hardware and capabilities, requiring extra time. Many are still looking forward to Stellar Blade's eventual release, including notable members of the gaming industry like Yoko Taro, the director of Nier Automata.
