Highlights

  • Stellar Blade, a PS5 exclusive RPG, seemingly draws inspiration from Christian belief and references the story of Adam and Eve with its characters and plot.
  • The game's use of biblical allusions suggests that the survivor colony Eve hails from represents Heaven or Eden, adding depth to the sci-fi/fantasy blend.
  • The design of the alien creatures, called NA:tives, in Stellar Blade may symbolize angels and their preexistence before humans, potentially hinting at a Rapture-like plot.

The upcoming PS5 exclusive Stellar Blade is a fantasy/sci-fi RPG set in a post-apocalyptic future. However, the influences on this upcoming story look to reach back to the past and humanity's origins in Christian belief.

Stellar Blade was revealed back in 2019 as 'Project EVE', a sci-fi RPG that takes place in a future where humanity has had to flee Earth after the planet was invaded by creatures called NA:tives. The player will take on the role of Eve, a member of this survivor colony whose mission is to return to Earth and free it from the invaders. There she'll meet the survivor Adam and find the last surviving human city, Xion, as well as the elder Orcal. Players will have to use their relationships with their comrades and the survivors of Xion to fight the alien NA:tives and their powerful abilities.

Stellar Blade Has Some Pretty Clear Influences From The Story Of Adam And Eve

Already, it's evident that Stellar Blade takes some inspiration from religion; the protagonist is named Eve and another character, likely one of very few humans given the scarcity of them on Earth, is named Adam. This level of religious allusion is one that's been called on throughout fiction for centuries, but the sci-fi/fantasy blend of Stellar Blade might just go deeper than the average metaphor.

Stellar Blade and The Garden of Eden

The game's plot synopsis involves Eve descending from the stars and then helping out Adam on Earth. This seems to be invoking the introduction of Eve in the bible, where she's introduced to Eden after Adam. The effect of this is to suggest that the colony Eve hails from is an allegory for Heaven. Other material has compounded this; In Stellar Blade's 2021 trailer, Adam calls those who fled Earth 'greater ones' and those left behind as being the 'abandoned'. Of course, this could also suggest that the colony represents Eden given the use of an Adam and an Eve.

For a more theoretical reference, Stellar Blade's 2022 trailer revealed a host of new human characters. It seems that one of these characters is named 'Lily', given what's written in the subtitles. With the significance of Eve and Adam's names, there's a chance that this could be a reference to Lilith from Jewish mythology. The figure of Lilith is an incredibly complex one with roots dating back to at least 600 BCE Mesopotamia, but in Jewish folklore she's said to be the first wife of Adam and possibly a major demon. It's not impossible that a character representing Lilith could be in the game.

Other Christian References In Stellar Blade Could Reveal A Lot

Stellar Blade's NA:tives have provoked some questions given the contradictory nature of their name. Their name clearly resembles the word 'native', but their role in the narrative is as invaders. However, the name could be trying to tell players something. The implication of the word 'native' could be implying that these aliens inhabited Earth before humans—that they're returning rather than arriving somewhere new.

Adding to this, the monstrous designs of Stellar Blade's aliens could also imply their nature. The 2021 trailer shows a great space alien clinging to a space station—one with four feathered, wing-like tentacles, a large central eye, and many smaller eyes dotted about its form. The creature looks to be injured on one side, suggesting it could have once had six tentacles. Either way, it clearly evokes a seraph angel from the bible. Other NA:tives also have circle/ring motifs in their designs, which could imply halos or wheels. All of this tells players that these creatures may be representing angels, who would've naturally predated humans. Their attack on Earth could suggest a Rapture-type situation, something compounded by Adam referring to humans on Earth as 'abandoned' and those on the colony as 'greater ones'.
