The video game universe has grown so much exponentially in the last few years that iconic titles have already crossed over to mainstream luxury brands. Just last year, Fortnite collaborated with Balenciaga to bring the brand's items into the game, and at the same time, transport Fortnite into the real world as branded merchandise. Now, Stella McCartney has also released a new collection that features Space Invaders, one of the world's most well-known arcade video games.
Though there are still some physical arcade centers today, they likely do not feel the same to those who grew up with Taito's Space Invaders still available to play. Especially since the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the situation when it comes to entertainment venues, it is not surprising for big companies like SEGA to take down its arcade business. However, for many gamers often hit with nostalgia and good feelings about the past, seeing their favorite arcade titles in modern fashion collections is likely very welcome.
According to the official Stella McCartney Japanese site, the Space Invaders knitwear lineup consists of only four items. The set includes a knit dress, cropped sweater, an asymmetrical-length sweater, and a fuzzy skirt. All of these pieces, except the kit dress, come in a pale pink colorway that highlights the colorful versions of the iconic Space Invaders aliens. The pieces are actually part of the Stella McCartney Spring 2022 collection, which puts focus on the Y2K generation and the blend of nostalgia with the future.
Though these items look pretty cozy, they can set gamers back financially with just how much they cost. The most expensive item in the set is the knit dress which costs 205,700 yen, roughly $1790 USD, while the cheapest item is the skirt, which still costs $94,600 yen or $822 USD. Luxury fashion brands are often priced at these ranges. However, for gamers who are not used to these kinds of expenses, it might be too much to pay just to be able to wear unique Space Invaders items on their person.
Nevertheless, there are likely still some hardcore fans of Taito's Space Invaders who might consider purchasing several pieces of the Stella McCartney collection. Though the items are already available to order on the brand's Japanese site, there is no indication yet whether they can be shipped to other countries around the world. Hopefully the brand will share the very cute collection to its global audience as well.
