Having been out for just over a month now, many gamers and reviewers have had a chance to really get to grips with the Steam Deck. As a result, Valve is asking Steam Deck users for feedback, particularly on the functionality of its verified games. Given that gaming is the bread and butter of the developer's handheld system, it's imperative that titles compatible with it run as smoothly as possible. However, there are still teething problems at this stage, it seems, as Ghostwire: Tokyo fans have been having a spot of bother lately.
According to a recent thread on the Steam Deck subreddit, a few people have noticed a game-breaking glitch in Tangle Gameworks' newly released title. The issue seems to stem from the opening cutscene, which some have noted leads to a black screen that seems to soft lock the game entirely. The bug was not just noticed by the Reddit community, either. Rock Paper Shotgun's hardware editor, James Archer, also made mention of the fact that they were experiencing an "impassable" black screen, rendering the game unplayable from that point on.
At the time of writing, there doesn't appear to be any official hotfix that's been rolled out just yet. However, there is supposedly a workaround, which involves users installing Proton Glorious Eggroll, or Proton GE, which is a customized version of the Linux-based operating system that the Steam Deck uses. One user in the Subreddit said they were able to get past the issue by playing the game on PC, getting through the cutscene, and then picking it up again on the Deck from that point on. However, another person commented that even on the PC, they were having similar issues, so it might not be Valve's device that's the problem, after all.
With more than 1,000 games verified or playable on the Steam Deck, with the last count being just shy of 1,250, Valve is keen to make this the next step in mobile gaming technology. It's important to state that not everyone is having the same problems with Ghostwire: Tokyo, but this one is a pretty severe glitch that Tangle Gameworks may provide an update to solve.
As for the Steam Deck itself, Valve recently released Windows 10 drivers for anyone who wishes to use an alternative OS to the one the device uses by default. However, it has also been experiencing some problems when running games. It is still early days, and as feedback starts to come through, it's assumed that the company will iron out any kinks and future iterations of its handheld PC will improve over time.
