Steam is kicking off another genre-celebrating sale soon, with the Steam Base Builder Fest showcasing a variety of games that feature base-building or construction mechanics in some form. Although the sale hasn't officially begun yet, plenty of Steam games to be featured in the event are already running significant discounts as part of the ongoing Chinese New Year sale.

Steam has long been the number one sales platform for PC gaming largely due to frequent sales that bring sizable discounts to thousands of titles. While larger sales like the legendary Steam Summer Sale and Steam Winter Sale span the store's full catalog, more focused events tend to celebrate specific themes, franchises, and genres like horror games, metroidvanias, and the extensive Warhammer franchise. Many of Steam's events also come with extras like mini-games and scavenger hunts or offer rewards for browsing such as free stickers and emojis that can be used in chat.

Steam's Base Builder Fest will run from January 23 to January 30 and is celebrating all sorts of games that feature base building or construction. The event encompasses a fairly broad range of titles, showcasing full-blown city builders like Cities: Skylines along with survival games like Valheim and Grounded. Although not typically classified as base-building games, titles like House Flipper are also being featured in the event due to construction mechanics that may still be appealing to fans of the genre. Even Fallout 76 has shown up in the event, as the customizable CAMP system involves some minor base building and customization using materials players find out in the open world.

Although many games are featured in the event, not all the games shown will actually be discounted. Factorio's strict no-sales policy means it will probably never be available at a discount even though it's still being celebrated during this event. Real-time strategy games have a strong presence during Base Builder Fest, as franchises like Age of Empires and Command and Conquer are all about building one's base up while destroying the enemy's constructions. Colony management games like Rimworld and its inspiration, Dwarf Fortress, are another large portion of the event's catalog. Plenty of free-to-play games have also been highlighted including Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming, Fallout Shelter, and Shop Titans.

Genre-specific Steam sales like the Base Builder Fest and the Steam Survival Fest are a great way to introduce gamers to hidden gems they may have missed within their favorite genres, and patient gamers can usually expect titles on their wishlist to go on sale at some point once the right event comes along.
