  • The emotional impact of losing community members in State of Decay 3 is highlighted in the trailer, emphasizing the importance of every survivor.

State of Decay 3 recently released a new trailer, and one line in particular deserves to be looked into more deeply. Being a game about surviving a zombie apocalypse, State of Decay 3 is naturally going to be dangerous for the survivors. If the trailer is any indication, the world may have become more hazardous than ever, with even more terrifying obstacles to jeopardize the player's community. However, the cinematic trailer managed to highlight one particular aspect of the game. While it plays into the story of the trailer, it should ring true for the game as a whole.

As the sequel to a distinctive zombie-based survival RPG, State of Decay 3 has a big niche to fill in the genre. Keeping a community alive in the last game revolved around more than just being able to fight zombies. Players had to find sources for vital needs such as food and medicine and make sure that their survivors were well-equipped. While destroying the corrupting influence of the Plague Hearts was the top priority, it was only one piece of the full picture. It will be interesting to see what extra twists State of Decay 3 can bring to the game's formula.

State of Decay 3's Next Reveal is Already Clear

The latest trailer for State of Decay 3 was a welcome gift, but the next aspect of the game that needs to be revealed is obvious.

State of Decay 3's Trailer Shows Why Every Survivor Matters

State of Decay 3's Trailer Told a Tragic Tale

A cinematic approach was taken for the State of Decay 3 trailer, following a group of survivors. Over the course of the trailer, fans are shown how the survivors operate out in the field, effectively taking out zombies while out on a scavenging run. However, once they need to rescue one of their allies who got surrounded, the situation turns sideways. The main melee fighter of the group gets overwhelmed by the horde, and the others are too late to save them. Once there's a chance to escape, one survivor takes a keychain that the fighter had carried throughout the trailer.

The horde situation shown in State of Decay 3 's trailer is a common sight in SoD 2 's higher difficulties.

State of Decay 3's Survivors Are Practically Strangers, But Still Close Allies

After the fighter's death, the narrator says that they'll keep their memory alive. While playing State of Decay 2, the game itself does that by showing a gravestone with the deceased character's name on it on the community screen every time a character dies. Likewise, the whole community takes a hit to morale for a while. Like the narrator says in the trailer, they didn't know each other well, but they were still surviving together. Losing a community member is always sad, especially if they were a longtime part of the team, and State of Decay 3's trailer put a lot of emphasis on that.

Losing a Survivor in State of Decay is Always Devastating

State of Decay 3 could be hinting at a more sentimental aspect of the game with its trailer. Skills in State of Decay 2 made every character important in their own right, so losing almost anyone deprived the community of a valuable member. However, State of Decay 3's trailer ends with a shrine to the fallen, featuring the fighter's keychain among other mementos. This could indicate something similar in the actual game, a physical shrine at the base reminding the player of who they've lost. That would act as an added incentive for players to protect their community members as much as possible.

State of Decay 3's trailer was an emotional one, and its lingering message of "Keep the Memory Alive" rings true. While the new features of State of Decay 3 haven't been shown off yet, the trailer has already given a strong impression. Even though State of Decay's survivors aren't huge characters with deep backstories, the player can still easily get attached to them. That makes it devastating whenever they lose one regardless of circumstance. In State of Decay 3 the memories of fallen survivors will persist throughout the campaign.
