There is a very strong chance that Starfield will set a new standard for sci-fi games when it finally hits store shelves. It will be the first new IP from Bethesda in 25 years and will be taking the studio's tried-and-true formula to a whole new genre filled with possibilities. It seems to have everything that sci-fi fans could ever want, and its many mechanics should inspire the future of the entire genre.

One feature that Starfield is introducing is a massive in-depth ship customization mechanic that gives players virtually limitless control over every aspect of their vehicle. Its many options should give players a reason to keep coming back for more, which should help give Starfield tons of replayability. It is something that very few sci-fi games have, but hopefully, Bethesda will change that. While games like Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen could benefit from a feature like it, it seems like the perfect fit for Hello Games' No Man's Sky.

No Man's Sky has come a long way since its launch, and it seems like the studio has plans to expand it even further. While its launch state left much to be desired, Hello Games is committed to making the game the best that it can be. After dozens of exciting updates, No Man's Sky has become one of the greatest sci-fi games around. It feels like the perfect treat for fans of the genre, and the future of the game has never looked brighter as the studio plans for even more massive updates.

Hello Games has not only introduced countless new mechanics to No Man's Sky's gameplay loop, but it has also given players the freedom to decide how they would like to express themselves within its galaxy. They can build extravagant bases in No Man's Sky, customize their character, design the interior of massive freighters, select the best-looking tools for the job, and purchase a wide assortment of vehicles during their journey. The sheer number of options gives the game a ton of life, but Hello Games could still take it a step further.

Starfield will let players customize almost every aspect of their ship, and No Man's Sky may want to take some notes. The game seems to be building itself around the concept that players can do whatever they want within its galaxy. The fact that players have limited control over what their ship looks like seems to go against that idea, but that could be rectified with a future update.

It may take some work, but letting players construct their personal ship in No Man's Sky could be a fantastic change. They should be able to choose its cockpit, customize its wings, select its thrusters, and even decide what the landing gear should look like. While finding unique ships at space stations is a fun part of No Man's Sky, letting players create the ship of their dreams could be even better.

There is a lot of content in store for No Man's Sky's future, and Hello Games may already be planning to add a ship customization feature sometime soon. On the other hand, Starfield's ship customization may fall flat, and players may prefer No Man's Sky's ship purchasing instead. That all remains to be seen, but the trailers and pre-release gameplay demos make it seem like the feature will be a game-changer. A game-changer that other sci-fi games should really consider adopting, and one of the first ones to do that should be No Man's Sky.

Starfield early access kicks off on September 1. The standard version launches on September 6 for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
