Building outposts is an important part of Starfield, both when it comes to mining inorganic resources and storing the mountains of loot that players will acquire as they make their way through the game's main story missions. Most will likely find themselves placing numerous outposts throughout the explorable star systems, as different planets and moons grant access to different elements and other unique goodies.

Unfortunately, as the number of outposts increases, players may find that keeping track of them all can become a little tricky. Sure, the game will name each new outpost after the planet or moon that it's based on by default, but for most players, this won't help all that much. Thankfully, it's possible to rename outposts in Starfield, with the steps required to do so being remarkably straightforward.

How to Rename Outposts in Starfield

To rename an outpost in Starfield, players simply need to stand in front of the outpost beacon and press either the X button (Xbox) or the R key (PC). Doing so will allow them to enter a new name, which they'll then be able to confirm by pressing the A button (Xbox) or the Enter key (PC). It's important that players only tap X or R while standing in front of the outpost beacon, as holding it will delete the outpost entirely, moving all of its contents into the player's inventory.

The Best Names for Outposts in Starfield

Knowing which planet an outpost is based on can be useful, but with over 1,000 planets and moons in Starfield, this may not be the best way to keep track of which outposts are where or the purpose of each one. As such, players may want to include the resources that are being stored or mined at an outpost in its name, particularly if they plan on sending stuff there remotely from their ship or another outpost.

Players may also want to build an outpost to serve as a home or base of operations for their companions, so including this information in the outpost name may not be a terrible idea either. Ultimately, players can rename their Starfield outposts however they see fit, providing they understand the system that they're using and are able to differentiate them from one another. After all, they could at some point find themselves with more than 20 outposts, at which point, trying to keep track of what's happening at each of them can be a bit of a nightmare.
