The first major city that players come across in Starfield is New Atlantis, which is on the planet Jemison in the Alpha Centauri system. The city is big and has plenty for players to do, but the planet Jemison has more to it than just one city.
Players who feel like exploring can jump over the fences that enclose New Atlantis and start surveying the flora, fauna, and resources that the planet has to offer. Completing this list will give players the item Survey Data: Jemison, which can sell for a lot, plus Starfield rewards exploration with experience points. This guide will make the process easier by explaining where to go, how to get there, and what to look for to complete the survey.
Biomes on Jemison
Jemison has a total of four biomes: deciduous forest, coniferous forest, mountains, and frozen mountains. New Atlantis is in a deciduous forest zone, and the Fracking Station is in the frozen mountains biome. Between the two locations, players will find every resource, all nine fauna, and seven of eight flora.
To get the last plant, players must create a new landing site in the mountain biome. To do so, search for a brown spot on the planetary view and select it. Players may have to click twice for the destination icon to appear. Once it does, players can land in the mountains and find the last bits of data they need to complete the survey.
Resources and Life on Jemison
Jemison is a planet full of diverse plants and animals and rich in natural resources. Players who want to catalog it all have their work cut out for them, which is why it helps to use some shortcuts. The Surveying skill lets players scan flora, fauna, and resources from farther away, which means they can keep their distance from dangerous animals and run around less often. The skills Zoology and Botany allow players to scan animals and plants less often to complete their survey entries, but the Geology skill doesn't make resource scanning any easier.
Something else players should know is that killing an animal counts as a scan. This is especially useful when it comes to aggressive animals too dangerous to approach and flying animals too distant to scan normally.

Resources
Jemison is home to just five natural resources. Like any other planet, players can find all five of them at any landing site, including the forests around New Atlantis.
Resource | Where to Collect |
---|---|
H2O (Water) | Natural springs |
Cl (Chlorine) | Toxic vents |
Pb (Lead) | Minable deposits on rocks |
Ar (Argon) | Toxic vents |
SiH3Cl (Chlorosilanes) | Natural springs |
How to Discover Jemison's Traits
To complete the survey, players must find and scan three special locations that represent the unique traits of the planet Jemison. Fortunately, players can find all three in the area surrounding New Atlantis. Simply look around for unexplored destinations using the hand scanner and start hiking. The unique traits aren't caves or artificial structures, but the other icons can turn out to be one of these traits.
Once players reach one of these locations, look around for one or two scannable objects. Only one location of each type needs scanning to add it to the survey data. However, players can benefit from visiting more than one, because each one provides a few XP and always has a rock pile or dung pile in the area. Each pile can contain credits, weapons, and useful resources. The traits to search for are:
- Ecological Consortium: scan the hive structures at the center of these mounds to learn about the symbiotic relationship between Jemison's wildlife.
- Global Glacial Recession: scan the rocky core of a melting glacier to learn about Jemison's rapid warming period.
- Sentient Microbial Colonies: scan the two highlighted microbial communities to learn about the strange ways in which the red fungus on Jemison is smarter than the sum of its parts. This may be a reference to another game about humans colonizing a planet around Alpha Centauri.
With the survey complete, players can make a serious bit of cash by selling the Jemison Survey Slate. However, players should save this slate for Vladimir in The Eye, who always offers the best price for survey results.
Starfield is available now on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
