Stardew Valley is a massive game brimming with content, and titles like those are bound to have endless theories about their lore and characters. For example, one of the most famous Stardew Valley theories includes the 'You Died At Joja' theory, stating that the player is actually dead during the events of the game.

Another popular fan theory details that Abigail's father is the Wizard who lives in the tower south of the farm and this conjecture is widely accepted as canon in the Stardew Valley community because of the amount of evidence it has behind it. However, another theory stems from that one, stating that Caroline, Abigail's mother, could actually be the Witch.

The Mystery of Abigail's Father

Stardew Valley Abigails Father

A popular Stardew Valley theory that is likely true claims that the Wizard is Abigail's father. After developing a friendship with Pierre, he'll tell the player that he's worried Abigail isn't his biological daughter. Likewise, Caroline may tell the player that she used to go on "secret walks" to the Wizard's tower, but to keep this fact a secret from Pierre because he might get jealous. The subtle implication here is that Caroline's had an affair with the Wizard.

Furthermore, the Wizard will tell the player he thinks one of the townsfolk could be his daughter, and putting those pieces together, it's highly likely that he means Abigail. Abigail herself seems to be oblivious of all this information, however, she will tell the player that she dyed her hair purple but it strangely never faded, hinting towards magical properties. At this point, players have likely noticed that Abigail and the Wizard's hair swatches are almost the exact same shade of purple. She also eats quartz and diamond, which likely means she's magical to some degree, regardless of whether or not she's aware.

Could Caroline Be Stardew Valley's Witch?

Stardew Valley Witch

To start off, it's worth noting that there are extremely brief moments where a traditional witch with green skin and black clothing has been seen, though it's never proven to be the Witch that lives in the hut in the northeastern corner of Stardew Valley. And the Witch seems to be strangely absent from her swamp all the time, which begs the question of "why?"

But if one were to assume that the Wizard theory above is correct, it's possible that Caroline could be the Witch that the Wizard used to date. On a few occasions, the Wizard will refer to his ex-wife, such as when asking the player to retrieve magic ink from his "ex-wife's house," sending them to the Witch's Hut. But it's a bit strange that the only time the Witch is ever seen is when she's flying through the sky cursing buildings, and if there is only one Witch in Stardew Valley, her and Caroline being the same person would explain why the hut is always vacant, nor does it have a bed or normal housing furniture—because maybe she doesn't sleep there; it's just her secret place to do black magic. And there's no reason why a powerful magical being like the Witch wouldn't be able to change her appearance to look more normal and switch to an unrecognizable one when she's flying around on a broomstick.

This interesting Stardew Valley theory gets a little weird when considering that Caroline seemingly had an affair with the Wizard, whereas the Wizard and the Witch used to be married. But perhaps the pairs continued to harbor feelings for one another after their marriage, leading to accidentally having a child with the Wizard while married to Pierre.

Stardew Valley is out now for Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
