New Stardew Valley players may find themselves puzzled by the presence of a large metal trapdoor in the center of town. At the start of the game, this door cannot be opened, but this can change if the player puts in the work.

Once the player has reached certain milestones, they can venture down the tubes and see what lies beneath Pelican Town. It might not sound particularly appealing, spending time in the sewers — but there are a few useful things here that players shouldn't overlook. Here's what Stardew Valley players can find lurking in these tunnels.

How To Access The Sewers

Once the player has donated 60 items to the museum, Gunther will appear at their farm in the morning. A cutscene will play in which he thanks the player for their efforts, and gives them a Rusty Key — however, he's not sure what it unlocks.

Once obtained, the player can use this key on the large metal trapdoor left of the graveyard in the town square, helpfully labeled "Sewers." Pinch that nose closed and head down the ladder, because there are some interesting things waiting down here.

What's In The Sewers?

There's a lot to be found down here, if players know where to look. Spend some time exploring, and farmers should come up with some interesting items.

Krobus

Stardew Valley farmer with Krobus

In the top right of the Sewer map, players will encounter a friendly Shadow Spirit named Krobus, who offers a daily selection of wares for purchase. Though wary at first, he can be befriended with gifts and conversation, and will eventually warm up to the farmer. The player can even ask him to be their roommate if they become close enough.

Krobus' wares rotate every day, but he has a few that remain static. Among the most valuable of these are one of the game's famous Stardrops, which increases the player's maximum energy. Another is the Return Scepter, which immediately warps the player back to the farmhouse.

Fishing

A river of green slime runs through the sewers — and unpleasant though it may seem, the player can indeed fish in it. As one might expect, though, it's hard to pull up a good catch. Trash and algae will be fished up more often than the player gets an actual bite, and when there's an actual fish on the hook, it's only Carp.

That is, of course, unless the player manages to snag the Mutant Carp, one of the legendary fish. It's tough to pull up, but for players trying for that achievement, it's worth the effort.

The Mutant Bug Lair

This area will only become available once the player begins the quest for the wizard to locate his Dark Talisman. To remove the barrier preventing entry, the player must first speak to Krobus about their mission, who will then allow them access.

Inside, players will find a swamp-like area swarming with cave insects. Players can return here as often as they like after retrieving the Dark Talisman. While there's not much of value to be found, it's a good location for farming Bug Meat to craft fishing bait, or to work towards the Cave Insect monster slaying goal for the Adventurer's Guild. Players can also fish for the Slimejack here, though it's difficult to do with bugs constantly attacking.

The Statue Of Uncertainty

Between the ladder to the town square and the Mutant Bug Lair, players will see an odd-looking statue. Upon interacting with it, they can make a donation of 10,000g to change one of their Professions. The statue can be used an infinite number of times, but the same fee applies with each use.

To change one's profession, first make the donation. When the player goes to sleep that night, the "Choose a Profession" screen will appear as it usually does when the player reaches the appropriate level.

Exit To Cindersap Forest

South of the entrance to the Mutant Bug Lair is a gate that leads to Cindersap Forest. When exiting here, the player will find themselves in the area where the Trash Bear appears, below the location where Spring Onions grow when in season. The player can enter from this gate as well, and it provides a handy shortcut between the forest and Pelican Town.
