Growing crops and earning gold are two major pieces to success in Stardew Valley. As the game goes through its different seasons, players need to adjust what they grow in order to stay profitable. Of the large variety of crops available in Stardew Valley, there are a few unique options that can earn players large sums.

In this top tier of crops in Stardew Valley is the Rare Seed. As its name implies, it can be a challenge to find. For those players looking to get their hands on a Rare Seed and turn it into a Sweet Gem Berry, this guide is here to help.

Where to Get Rare Seeds in Stardew Valley

Those looking to track down the Rare Seed need not look in JojaMart or Pierre's General Store because neither of these stores offer this seed. Instead, players need to check in at the Traveling Cart in Cindersap Forest on Fridays and Sundays to find this seed. The best time of the year to do this is in the Spring or Summer, when the Traveling Cart stocks between 1 and 5 of them. In the Fall and Winter, the Traveling Cart also has a small chance to stock this important seed, but there is less than a 2% chance to find them.

Purchasing Rare Seeds from the Traveling Cart (between 600 and 1,000 gold) is the most profitable way to grow the Sweet Gem Berry, which has a base value of 3,000 gold. As an alternative, players can place Sweet Gem Berries into a Seed Maker to create more Rare Seeds, but the profit margin can dip dramatically. Players should stick to placing only lower quality berries into a Seed Maker to maintain a solid return on investment.

How to Grow Rare Seeds in Stardew Valley

The description of the Rare Seed is a bit misleading in that it claims that it requires an entire season to grow. In actuality, even if the player doesn't have the Agriculturist profession or uses any fertilizer, the Rare Seed takes 24 days to grow. With either or both of the Speed-Gro fertilizer or Agriculturist bonus working, players can shrink that length even further down. To grow the Rare Seed, players need only plant it like any other crop and keep it watered each day.

Rare Seeds need to be sown in the Fall and are one of the most profitable crops in the entire game. For this reason, players need to unlock the Greenhouse in their Stardew Valley playthrough in order to get the most value out of these crops. In order to do this, players can purchase the Greenhouse option from the Community Development Form in JojaMart for 35,000 gold, or complete all Pantry Bundles in the Community Center.

Stardew Valley is available on Mobile, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS Vita, and Xbox One.
