The virtual farming world of Stardew Valley would be incomplete without animals. Animals are an integral part of the farm and serve multiple purposes. Players can adopt a pet (cat or dog) to accompany them on their adventures or purchase a horse to ride. Farm animals can be purchased too, which serve as a source of healthy produce, such as eggs and milk.

Raising virtual animals in Stardew Valley is quite challenging, especially when players have a limited budget at the start of the game. As the game progresses, players will encounter multiple story quests, one being the Raising Animals Quest, which challenges players to expand their farm.

How to Complete the Raising Animals Quest

Players need to complete the Getting Started Quest, which involves growing and harvesting Parsnips before they can unlock the Raising Animals quest.

Once triggered, the Raising Animals Quest requires players to contact Robin and ask her to build a Coop or Barn. Robin is the town carpenter in Stardew Valley who runs her own Carpenter’s Shop. She constructs new buildings on the farm in exchange for raw materials and money.

This quest does not require players to purchase any farm animals.

Building a Coop

A Coop is a farm building that can house chickens, ducks, rabbits, and dinosaurs. To build a Coop, players require 300 Wood and 100 Stone. The total building cost for a basic Coop is 4,000 gold. This Coop can accommodate up to 4 animals and features a Hay Hopper and a Feeding Bench to ensure the well-being of the animals.

Building a Barn

A Barn is a farm building that can house cows, goats, sheep, pigs, and ostriches. To build a Barn, players require 350 Wood and 150 Stone. The total building cost for a basic Barn is 6,000 gold, which is expensive in comparison to a Coop. Just like the Coop, a basic Barn can accommodate up to 4 animals and features a Hay Hopper and a Feeding Bench to ensure that the animals are well-fed.

Robin takes three days each to construct the Coop and Barn. The Carpenter’s Shop is open from 9 am to 5 pm every day except Tuesday, and it closes early on Fridays. When Robin is hired to construct buildings on the farm, her shop will remain closed for all the days that she is working.

On successfully completing the Raising Animals Quest, players are rewarded with 100 gold.
