Stardew Valley’s picturesque countryside would be incomplete without cows. These gentle creatures add a natural appeal to the virtual farm. Just like in real life, cows are the most common source of milk in the game.

Milk is a versatile ingredient used in a variety of cooking recipes in Stardew Valley. It can be sold directly or turned into valuable products like Cheese. Selling milk can be a profitable venture, especially if players have a lot of well-fed and happy cows. Learning how to milk cows not only deepens the connection between the player and their virtual homestead but also contributes to the farm’s financial success.

Players need to construct a Barn before they can keep cows on the farm. A normal Barn can be purchased from Robin at the Carpenter’s Shop for 6,000g. The building materials required are 350 pieces of Wood and 150 Stones.

Once the Barn is constructed, players can purchase a Cow at Marnie’s Ranch for 1,500g. There are two varieties of cows available: White and Brown, which are randomly assigned to players at the time of purchase.

If a Cow is fed daily, it will mature after five nights have passed. A fully grown adult cow produces Milk on a daily basis. On reaching sufficient Friendship points and Happiness levels, cows start producing ‘Large Milk.’ To collect milk from the cows, players require a ‘Milk Pail,’ which can be purchased from Marnie at her Ranch for 1,000g.

Players can place a Chest inside their Barn to store the Milk Pail so that it doesn’t take up valuable inventory space.

To milk a Cow, players need to first equip the Milk Pail from their Inventory. Next, they need to approach the Cow and click on it to begin the milking process. The process naturally stops when the cow has no more milk left. After successfully milking the cow, players will find a bottle of milk added to their inventory. Milking a cow increases Friendship by 5 points.

Cows can only be milked once per day.

When players reach Farming Level 10, they can purchase an Auto-Grabber from Marnie’s Ranch. It costs 25,000g but automatically milks all the cows inside the barn where it is placed, saving players a lot of time and effort. However, The Auto-Grabber prevents players from gaining the +5 Friendship points typically earned by manually milking a cow.

Stardew Valley is available now for Android, iOS, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
