Stardew Valley features many elements inspired by real life, such as a pig’s remarkable ability to find Truffles hidden underground. Truffles are a valuable and gourmet mushroom-like resource with a unique taste. Players can obtain them in the game by raising pigs on the farm. Even though Truffles are spawned by Pigs, they do not classify as animal products, such as eggs or milk.

Despite being mushrooms, Truffles are inedible in Stardew Valley and cannot be consumed by the player directly. Truffles have a base sell price of 625 gold, which goes up to 1,250 gold for Iridium-Quality Truffles, making them an absolutely worthy asset on the farm.

How to Keep Pigs on The Farm

Pigs are one of the farm animals that players can raise in Stardew Valley. They are available for purchase at Marnie’s Ranch for 16,000 gold. However, before a player can purchase Pigs, they need to build a Deluxe Barn on their farm.

Deluxe Barn

The Deluxe Barn is the final Barn upgrade. The total building cost when upgrading from a Big Barn is 25,000 gold. The building materials required are 550 pieces of Wood and 300 Stones. Robin, the Town’s Carpenter, takes two days to upgrade the Barn.

If a player wants to build a Deluxe Barn from scratch, it would cost 43,000 gold, and the materials required will be 1350 pieces of Wood and 650 Stones. The Deluxe Barn can house 12 animals – including Cows, Goats, Sheep, Ostriches and Pigs.

How to Get Truffles in Stardew Valley

Pigs are the primary source of Truffles in Stardew Valley. They work differently compared to other barn animals. Instead of producing goods within the barn, Pigs venture outside and actively search for hidden Truffles. They use their snouts to dig them up and leave the Truffles on the ground.

Truffles are not directly produced by other animals or plants on the farm. However, they are occasionally available for purchase at The Traveling Cart, with prices ranging from 1,875 to 3,125 gold.

Requirements for Truffles Production

Truffles can only be produced if:

  • The pig is mature and well-fed.
  • The pig is allowed to roam freely outside the barn.
  • The weather is clear; there is no rain or storm.
  • There are available tiles outside on which the truffle can be placed.
  • It is not Winter.

Locating The Truffles

Truffles are randomly generated on the farm every day based on where the pig has walked. As such, players must increase the range of available tiles for each Pig they own, giving them a chance to spread out from each other. It is not necessary for players to stay on the Farm and wait for Pigs to dig up Truffles.

To guarantee that a Pig produces Truffles, players must ensure that it is walking over uncovered tiles – free from any debris or other objects. This does not include any crafted flooring or paths.

Alternatively, players can use Fences or other barriers to restrict the movement of Pigs leaving the Barn. Doing this can be beneficial as it confines the area where they can generate truffles, making it more concentrated.

However, Truffles can sometimes end up being placed outside the fenced areas. This is because Truffles are usually spawned right in front of the pig. If the tile in front of the pig is occupied by a fence (or another obstacle), then the Truffle generates one tile further, and so on. This process continues until the game finds an unoccupied tile.

Chances for Truffle Production

If all the necessary conditions are satisfied, Pigs have the following probabilities for generating Truffles:

First Truffle of the Day

If a Pig has not generated a Truffle for the day yet and is walking around on free tiles, there is a 99.99% chance for it to produce a Truffle. Friendship levels have no effect on the generation of the First Truffle of the day. Therefore, even a pig with zero friendship points has a 99.99% chance of producing one truffle each day.

Extra Truffles

After discovering the first Truffle of the day, a pig can continue to find extra Truffles. The chances of finding an additional Truffle depend on the animal's Friendship levels. The formula for finding extra truffles is [Animal Friendship / 1500]. This means that if a Pig has reached max Friendship (1000), there is a 66% chance for it to create an extra Truffle. The average number of Truffles a pig produces at max Friendship is ≈3 Truffles per day.

The Gatherer Profession allows players a double harvest, while The Botanist Profession makes all the Truffles iridium-quality.

Gathering Frequency

Truffles that have not been collected will remain in their place until the next day. This presents a great opportunity for players to let Truffles build up daily and then collect them all at once. However, any Truffles left uncollected by the end of a season (28th day) will vanish on the morning of the new season’s 1st day.

No Truffles are generated during the Winter, as pigs remain inside their barn during this season.
