Every farm, both in real life and in the video game world of Stardew Valley, needs a scarecrow or two to keep scavenging birds at bay. In the beloved indie farming simulator, players can craft their own — or they can purchase unique scarecrows called Rarecrows.
Rarecrows serve the same function in Stardew Valley as regular scarecrows: they protect all crops within an 8-square radius from being eaten by crows. However, their unique designs provide some visual interest, which can help players in decorating their farm. What's more, collecting them all leads to an interesting reward. Here's how to gather the full set.
All Rarecrows, Locations, & Prices
#1: Stardew Valley Fair
Rarecrow #1's design is a reference to the character Turnip Head from the beloved Studio Ghibli movie Howl's Moving Castle. Available at the Stardew Valley Fair's prize counter, this guy costs 800 Star Tokens, which players can earn by winning the fair's minigames or the grange display contest. The festival takes place every Fall 16th.
#2: Spirit's Eve Festival
As he does at most of Pelican Town's festivals, Pierre has his stall set up to make sales as Pelican Town embraces the spooky season on Fall 27th every year. He sells this Rarecrow, which is made in the design of a witch, for 5,000g.
#3: Casino
Once the player gains access to Mr. Qi's Casino behind The Oasis in Calico Desert, they can find this alien-shaped Rarecrow at the prize counter. The price for this Rarecrow is relatively steep, at 10,000 Casino tokens. It will likely take players several rounds of Calico Jack and lots of luck on the slot machines to rack up the wealth.
#4: Festival Of Ice
On the 9th of Winter, the Festival of Ice takes place at Marnie's ranch, where Pierre will sell this snowman-shaped Rarecrow for 5,000g. If players are looking to get it slightly cheaper, they can check the Traveling Cart any day it's in town during Winter — it has a random chance to appear in the inventory for 4,000g.
Rarecrow #5: Flower Dance
On Spring 24th, the Flower Dance takes place in Cindersap Forest. Pierre's stand at this festival mainly sells floral decor, but he also sells this farm-girl Rarecrow for the reasonable price of 2,500g.
Rarecrow #6: The Dwarf
Players must purchase this Rarecrow, crafted in the likeness of the Dwarf, from the Dwarf's shop at the top of the Mines. To do this, though, the player must be able to speak the Dwarf's language. They can learn Dwarvish by donating all four Dwarf Scrolls to the museum, after which they can purchase items from the deep-dweller. The dwarf Rarecrow is available for 2,500g.
Rarecrow #7: The Museum
This raccoon-designed Rarecrow is a gift from Gunther. The player will recieve it after donating 20 items to the Museum. Once he has gifted one to them, players can purchase as many of this rarecrow as they like from the Night Market for 5,000g each.
Rarecrow #8: The Museum
Much like the seventh, the final Rarecrow is a gift from Gunther, this time for donating 40 items to the Museum. Like the other Rarecrow obtained this way, players can purchase it from the Night Market for 5,000g once they have received the initial gift.
The Deluxe Scarecrow
After the player has collected all 8 Rarecrows, there is a 90.5% chance per night that the player will receive a letter the following morning, signed "The Z.C. Rarecrow Society." This letter will congratulate the player on their achievement, and grant them the recipe to craft a Deluxe Scarecrow. This item serves the same function as a regular scarecrow, but affects a radius twice as large.
Once the player has received the recipe, they may craft the Deluxe Scarecrow using the following materials:
- 50 Wood
- 1 Iridium Ore
- 40 Fiber
