The last anyone heard of Knights of the Old Republic, the remake had entered muddied water and its future was unknown. Reportedly, development has shifted from Asypr to Saber Interactive, but without much in the way of official comments, many felts have been left in the dark about, perhaps, one of the most popular eras of the Star Wars timeline.

However, Star Wars Celebration has brought some balance back to the Force. An official new timeline dropped of canon eras, with fans immediately noting the obvious time periods: The Fall of the Jedi, Reign of the Empire (aka the Jedi Dark Times), Age of Rebellion, the New Republic, and Rise of the First Order. However, three more eras were added. A new era called Dawn of the Jedi was added, where apparently there will be movies and other content related to the First Jedi, an origin story of The Force in other words. The latter is the New Jedi Order, which sees Daisy Ridley return as Rey Skywalker 15 years after the events of Rise of Skywalker. The third, squeezed in there, is just as exciting.

The Star Wars Timeline Expanded, Includes The Old Republic as Canon

the old republic

While Star Wars media like comics have been setting up, establishing, and defining The High Republic Era that took place before the Fall of the Jedi, between it and the Dawn of the Jedi is The Old Republic. There's no question about it: this era is now canon. In the past, this era has been called "canon-adjacent," a grey area that didn't have much impact on the timeline, and has only been flirted with by Disney. For example, Rise of Skywalker includes one Sith Trooper Legion officially designated as "The 3rd: Revan Legion." The problem with this is, as much as it is a canon appearance, it has no major implications. It's a canon nod that is effectively an acknowledgment and nothing more.

However, including this time period on the official Star Wars timeline means it can no longer be ignored. Maybe some elements within it are not canon, but the time period itself is. And because this time period is defined by the KOTOR games, as well as the MMORPG, these events are not just "Canon-adjacent" anymore. They are on the timeline, they are real.

Now, how Disney may change certain details remains to be seen. But this means the Remake, whenever it releases, also has the chance to correct any canon that Disney may want it to make. Knights of the Old Republic, the upcoming remake set in this era, is officially canon though, and that has huge implications for future movies, games, and content set in this universe.

The KOTOR Remake is reportedly back in development.
