Star Wars Outlaws will take fans on an open-world trek through the criminal underbelly of the iconic galaxy far, far away next year. Ubisoft announced that it would be partnering with Lucasfilm Games to publish an open-world Star Wars game way back in 2021. Massive Entertainment, the in-house studio behind The Division 2 and The Crew 2, is developing this sandbox space adventure, which will reportedly allow players to pilot a mix of classic Star Wars and brand-new creations across several planets.

There has been very little official word on Ubisoft’s open-world Star Wars game (which was tentatively titled “Project Helix”) in the two years since its official announcement, but there have been plenty of rumors and reports about when more information would be revealed. Back in January, Massive Entertainment creative director Julian Gerighty brought in the new year with a cryptic tweet hinting at his team’s Star Wars project, and an unverified source claimed that the studio was aiming to release Project Helix sometime in early 2024.

Now Project Helix has been confirmed for next year, and even has an official name and a few plot details to go with it. At the very beginning of today’s Xbox Games Showcase, Massive Entertainment presented a CGI teaser trailer for Star Wars Outlaws, an open-world Star Wars game that will be set sometime during the original movie trilogy. This trailer starts with an unnamed female protagonist playing Sabacc in a cantina while narrating about how the galaxy “belongs to the Syndicates.” Her game is cut short after a pair of bounty hunters arrive, prompting her and her cat-like alien companion to flee.

A bar brawl soon breaks out to cover her escape, and she soon climbs onto a speeder bike outside as she narrates how she won't be held back anymore. This quest for freedom leads to her ship, where a stranger named Jalen - who somewhat resembles Kyle Katarn from the Dark Forces games - offers to help her pull off an unspecified mission.

After more images of the unnamed heroine sneaking into Syndicate strongholds, fending off enemies on her swoop bike, and fleeing from the Empire in her ship, the game’s official title of Star Wars Outlaws is shown, along with a vague launch window of 2024. While there wasn’t any gameplay footage shown during this teaser trailer, Outlaws looks like it could be an interesting journey through the dark and complex criminal underworld of the Star Wars galaxy - something that was teased in the past with unproduced projects like Star Wars 1313. Star Wars Outlaws could tap into that potential when it launches next year.

Star Wars Outlaws is in development.
