Earlier this month Ubisoft finally gave fans their first look at the upcoming game, Star Wars Outlaws. The footage in question revealed the game's premise, its central characters, and gameplay. In addition, Ubisoft also revealed that some familiar names would be involved in Star Wars Outlaws.

During the Ubisoft Forward event, the company gave gamers an idea as to who they would be dealing with in the game. The names of a few criminal organizations were mentioned, such as the Pyke Syndicate, who were the main antagonists in The Book of Boba Fett. The developers also mentioned that the Hutts would be a faction that players would have to contend in some way.

Who Are The Hutts In The Star Wars Franchise?

Star Wars Jabba the Hutt in Return of the Jedi

The Star Wars franchise has always had something of a strange relationship with the Hutts. Like many things in the franchise, the Hutts have their own dense lore. However, they are repeatedly used as either comedic relief or as the head of organized crime syndicates. Star Wars: The Old Republic games almost always had a member of the species as the head of some kind of organized gang and typically battle other species for control of the galaxy's underworld.

The most famous of the Hutts is Jabba the Hutt from the original Star Wars trilogy. First mentioned in A New Hope, the character was an off-camera antagonist and had put a bounty on Han Solo's head for a lost shipment. The character made his first full appearance in Return of the Jedi, where he was eventually killed by Princess Leia as she, Luke, Han, and Lando made their escape from his barge. The developer of Star Wars Outlaws recently confirmed that the Hutts will be an organization that protagonist Kay Vess deals with.

How Star Wars Outlaws Will Involve The Hutts

The reveal trailer for Star Wars Outlaws shows that it's an open-world action-adventure game that involves heists and other crimes. It's reasonable to assume that, like with most crime-driven stories, the characters will have to collect equipment, tools, money, and experts in order to pull off whatever crime is being pitched. While not directly referenced by name, Jabba the Hutt could be seen in this trailer which suggests that he will play a role in the upcoming game.

During this period in the franchise canon, the universe was in chaos even for organized crime. As told in the Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters comic story, a war had broken out between the various criminal factions in the universe that was triggered over the possession of Han Solo's body. By the time the dust settled, Jabba was the only remaining leader of the Hutts. While it's not clear when the game takes place in relation to this event, it is still likely that Kay will have to deal with Jabba, as he is the leader of the galaxy's biggest crime syndicate. This is supported by the developer's commentary on the gameplay footage where they name-drop the Hutts as one of the factions she would have to deal with.

In Star Wars Outlaws' gameplay footage, the main character was stealing an object from the Pyke Syndicate for a broker. While it isn't clear how big a role he will have in the upcoming game Kay will undoubtedly have to deal with one of his lieutenants. The majority of Jabba's wealth came from controlling the majority of piracy, slavery, and trafficking of illegal goods. It would not at all be a stretch to assume that Kay may be tasked with taking part in some of these actions or doing something to prevent this.

There are still a lot of questions around how the Hutts will be involved in Star Wars Outlaws. Given the game's premise and the developer's words, however, it's not illogical to assume that the main character will cross paths with them regularly. Until Ubisoft shows more gameplay footage, players will simply have to wait and see.
