Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic fans have been asking for a remake for years, and now it seems that they will finally get their wish. According to recent reports, a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is actively in development at Aspyr, a studio primarily known for porting older games to modern platforms, including a variety of Star Wars titles. The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake has not been officially announced in any capacity, but its existence has been corroborated by reliable sources.

YouTuber MrMattyPlays first leaked the existence of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake and its development studio, Aspyr, months ago. MrMattyPlays has since revealed more details about what fans can expect from the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, which will apparently be making some major changes when compared to the original release. MrMattyPlays has a proven track record with the KOTOR remake and so he is more trustworthy than other "leakers," but fans should still take this news with a grain of salt until an official reveal takes place.

According to MrMattyPlays' information, the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is going to be doing away with the real-time/turn-based combat system combination of the original game to be more of an action-RPG. While this will likely be a controversial move, it makes sense when one considers the current gaming landscape when compared to the industry as it was when KOTOR originally launched in 2003.

The original combat system in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic isn't really what garnered the game so much praise anyway. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was critically-acclaimed at the time of its release more so due to its story and characters, with Darth Revan's popularity persisting to this day. If the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake retains what fans loved about the story, then perhaps purists will be forgiving if the combat system isn't quite how they remember it.

Those who prefer the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic combat system should note that they can play the original game on some modern platforms. Android and iOS versions of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic exist, with those mobile games having been handled by Aspyr as well. Not only that, but the original Xbox version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X thanks to the Xbox backward compatibility program, and it's also readily available to play on PC through Steam.
