One fan encounters a scene in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor that likely was a reference to the seminal SNES classic Super Metroid. The latest game taking place in a Galaxy far, far away is the follow-up to Respawn Entertainment's previous title, 2019's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. This sequel iterates on the Souls-like combat of the last game, where players can take on a variety of threats as Cal Ketis using his trusty lightsaber. This includes using different stances with the lightsabers, allowing for more combat variety as well. Much like its predecessor, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was released to mostly positive reviews, issues with the PC version notwithstanding. Fans are having a lot of fun with the game, some even finding a possible reference to another sci-fi adventure, Super Metroid.Super Metroid is one of the SNES' defining games, and one that helped codify the search-action/Metroidvania genre that many gamers know today. Despite the series itself being a pastiche and inspired by several other sci-fi IPs and films, there are just as many games that homage to its legacy. One fan posted a scene in Jedi: Survivor that is similar to one that can be found while playing Super Metroid.In a clip posted by Twitter user wayneisboss, Cal is swinging across a gap using his grappling hook, and he lands near the opening of a cave. He expresses his surprise at what's waiting there, that being a Bogling, which are small furry creatures in the Star Wars universe that are normally native to the planet Bogano. Cal even notes that the ones he's talking to are really far away from their home planet. Once he runs inside following the Bogling, he meets with three others who then proceed to leap up a shaft out of the cave, jumping from wall to wall.
This is very similar to a point in Super Metroid, where Samus can run into a room that contains three monkey-like creatures. From there, they teach her an ability that is incredibly useful, the wall jump. Despite being weighed down by Samus' bulky power suit, with enough practice, a diligent player can end up scaling a huge pit by using the walls as leverage. The technique is even noted by Cal himself, asking BD if he thinks he can also jump out of the cave using the walls.
Nintendo's sci-fi franchise has received plenty of shout-outs in the past two decades, with many game designers respectful of or inspired by Super Metroid. While it's uncertain if this Easter egg is an intentional reference to Super Metroid, some fans who think it is appreciated the nod.
