EA and Respawn Entertainment's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is out now, but players are running into problems installing the game. Some fans will already be aware of the Star Wars game's bugs and significant performance issues on PC, but many Steam users can't even get far enough for that to be an issue.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor recently launched and is the sequel to 2019's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Unfortunately, the science fantasy action RPG isn't off to a great start. News recently broke of the game's cripplingly poor performance on PC, prompting EA to issue an official statement about it. These PC performance problems also led the game to be inundated with negative user reviews, dropping it to "Mixed" on Steam. The PC ports' issues are also reflected in its Metacritic score, with the PC version of Jedi: Survivor receiving a rating of 79 compared to 86 and 87 on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

However, Steam users have encountered a new problem with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The game must unpack as part of the installation process, which eats up a big chunk of the player's hard drive space. Users with limited data storage also have another problem because the less room there is, the longer unpacking takes. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor players are not happy about this, and some have taken to Reddit to voice their concerns.

That's assuming it works correctly, which isn't always the case, as some report an estimated installation time of over a year. Of course, just because Steam says it will take a year for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor to unpack doesn't mean it will. One user reported that it only took around two hours, regardless of what Steam predicts. Still, users can reportedly solve this problem by turning off disk write caching in their hardware settings. It's not clear if doing so speeds up Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's installation or simply makes Steam display a more accurate time.

Either way, the unpacking is proving to be an unexpected hassle for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's PC players. This is particularly frustrating for players who preloaded the game and thought they would be able to play the moment it officially launched. Instead, they are greeted by a multi-hour wait before jumping in. This is not an uncommon occurrence when preloading games off Steam, but it seems to be particularly bad this time around. However, given the issues with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on PC, Steam users might be better off waiting anyway.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is out now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
