Last year, EA and Respawn Entertainment released Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the first single-player entry in the Star Wars franchise for some time. And while EA's use of the Star Wars license has been a point of contention for some fans, Fallen Order proved to be pretty popular upon its release, despite numerous technical issues. It appears that popularity translated into sales, too.
In an earnings report published today, EA revealed just how many Jedi: Fallen Order players are out there, with the game reaching more than 10 million unique players. That number doesn't directly translate into sales, as Origin Access allows players to access the game for $15 a month, along with other games in EA's lineup, but it's an impressive milestone nonetheless.
Just yesterday, Fallen Order got a free content update, giving players a reason to step back into the shoes of Cal Kestis, the game's Jedi protagonist. With combat similar to Sekiro and some Metroidvania aspects, Fallen Order was a fairly interesting combo, though its success should speak for itself.
EA has canceled multiple Star Wars games, leading to frustration among fans. So far, many of EA's Star Wars titles have been multiplayer games with live-service elements, leading to negative feedback from members of the community. That came to a head during the launch of Battlefront 2, which featured unbalanced progression due to the inclusion of loot boxes.
Fallen Order's success may give EA a reason to further explore single-player games in the Star Wars universe. Yesterday, KOTOR began trending due to a tweet asking which Star Wars game was the best, with many people responding with the beloved Bioware title Knights of the Old Republic. Many would love to see the series return, though it isn't clear if EA would ever choose to bring it back.
For now, fans can only wait and see what EA has in the works for the franchise. EA plans to release 14 games this fiscal year, and a Star Wars game for next-gen consoles would make sense, though nothing has been confirmed. Its one of the most beloved franchises on the planet, though, so letting it go to waste is a missed opportunity.
