  • The new Star Wars FPS game by Respawn is expected to distance itself from the Star Wars Battlefront series and may have similarities to Apex Legends, offering a fresh and exciting entry into the franchise.

After Respawn created one of the best single-player Star Wars series in a while, the studio seems to be preparing to expand its sci-fi catalog immensely over the next couple of years. Not only is it allegedly working on the next Star Wars Jedi title, but it is also apparently developing a brand-new FPS title set in the galaxy far, far away. Not much is known about this title yet. However, fans seem to be extremely excited to see what it will look like.

Star Wars has had a long and successful career in the FPS market, so it makes complete sense why Respawn would be tapped to make a new one. Some fans may be expecting it to just be another Star Wars Battlefront, yet there is a chance it is something else entirely. The studio specializes in fast-paced combat, riveting stories, and has also shown itself to be pretty good at the live-service model as seen with Apex Legends. While it may follow in the footsteps of Dice's sci-fi outings, there is a stronger chance that this game will simply be Apex Legends with Star Wars characters.

Respawn Could Become Apex Legends Star Wars Edition

Respawn Specializes in Fast-Paced FPS Gameplay

Respawn Entertainment has made quite a name for itself over the last couple of years. After debuting its first title Titanfall in 2014, the studio has gone on to become one of the biggest names in the FPS genre. While it may not be on the level of Activision, it has amassed a pretty loyal fanbase thanks to the fast-paced gameplay of Titanfall 2 and Apex Legends. And on top of all of that, the studio has also shown that it excels at crafting single-player adventures through the Star Wars Jedi series.

With its FPS titles, Respawn has shown that it knows how to craft unique movement systems and high-stakes action. The games specialize in letting players speed across the maps using an assortment of tools, and Apex Legends tossed in a plethora of unique abilities to make the concept even more fun. The only FPS that the studio made that does not really feature this type of gameplay was the VR title Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, but that is due to the fact it is based in reality. Star Wars does not have that same limitation, and as such, it will likely take this movement system to a whole new level.

The Battlefront Series May Have Been Shelved For Now

Not only will this Star Wars FPS likely tap into what Respawn does best, but the Star Wars Battlefront series may also have been put on the back burner for the foreseeable future. After EA got the Star Wars license, fans were extremely excited to see what Dice would do with the brand, as many players had been clamoring for a return to the Battlefront franchise for years. Even though that 2015 game may have looked beautiful, it lacked much of the content that the original titles had. It may have been successful, yet it was not quite what fans wanted.

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 aimed to rectify that, but it failed to do so. The game can be a lot of fun now, but upon release, it garnered a lot of criticism over the way it handled microtransactions as they were tied to the game's progression. On top of that, the single-player mode left much to be desired. Because of all of that, the game failed to make a substantial impact and the brand has seemingly been tarnished. Some players still yearn for a third entry, but after the missteps of this one, it seems like that will never come.

This new Star Wars FPS will be EA's way to prove itself yet again by tapping into its best asset. And because of the controversy surrounding the Battlefront franchise, this new game will likely try to distance itself from that series immensely. This means that it will probably look nothing like that series outside of the various Star Wars elements. Instead, there is a strong chance it is more in line with Apex Legends, which should lead to an exciting entry into the franchise.
