Highlights

  • Star Wars Eclipse, a story-driven game developed by Quantic Dream, will likely not be released in 2024 due to the game's rough development cycle and staffing struggles.
  • The lack of updates on Star Wars Eclipse and Quantic Dream's statement that the game is "just simmering" suggests that a 2024 release is unlikely, and the game may be released in 2025 or later.
  • Despite the uncertainty, fans can still hold onto hope that Star Wars Eclipse is not cancelled and that more information about the game's progress will be revealed in 2024, with the long production period giving the developer more time to perfect it.

Star Wars Eclipse is a story-driven game being developed by Quantic Dream, the developer of Detroit: Become Human, and fans of the developer's past work have been anxiously awaiting its release since it was announced in 2021. Much like Detroit: Become Human, Star Wars Eclipse will give players the opportunity to craft their own Star Wars adventure through meaningful choices and the branching narrative that those choices create. Despite everything that has been confirmed about the game, however, its release date remains unknown.

Star Wars Eclipse has had a rough development cycle, and that is especially evident in the lack of formal updates the game has received since its announcement. In light of this, many fans have been wondering whether the game will be released soon or if they will have to wait another few years to see it happen. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much hope on the horizon for a 2024 release, but more updates on the game shouldn't be ruled out by any means.

What to Expect From Star Wars Games in 2024

Star Wars games are making their mark once again with a big release scheduled for 2024, as well as potential new information for upcoming games.

Star Wars Eclipse Likely Won't Release in 2024

As much as fans may want it, Star Wars Eclipse is unlikely to be released in 2024. In a December 2021 post on X (formerly Twitter), Tom Henderson, owner of Insider Gaming, stated that "Eclipse is believed to be around 3–4 years away MINIMUM." While this seemed to indicate a possible 2024 release at the time, Quantic Dream was also struggling to hire staff, and their game engine was not built for such a massive title.

More recently, in a September 2023 interview with IGN, Quantic Dream's VP, Lisa Pendse, said that Star Wars Eclipse "exists," but that it's still "just simmering." "Just simmering" disappointingly implies that the game isn't moving along very rapidly (if at all), as it sounds like the game is nowhere near a state where the finishing touches are being put on it. It just doesn't seem like a 2024 release for the highly anticipated Star Wars title is viable.

As Tom Henderson mentioned in 2021, Star Wars Eclipse was at least 3–4 years away at the time, so that alone doesn't rule out the possibility of a 2024 release. However, as there have yet to be any recent formal updates on the game, Star Wars Eclipse is more likely to be released in 2025 or later, especially with Lisa Pendse implying that the game was not ready yet near the end of 2023. At the very least, fans can hold onto hope that the VP's comments indicate the game is still a work in progress, as opposed to it being canceled entirely.

2024 Could Finally Bring Some News About Star Wars Eclipse

As anticipation continues to build for Quantic Dream's upcoming High Republic Star Wars story, the developer is behooved to make a formal announcement regarding its progress very soon. Games that go through rocky development cycles with no regular updates from their developers are easily forgotten, and it also contributes to a substantial amount of doubt about their quality once they finally surface. Bearing that in mind, it's likely that 2024 will bring some news about Star Wars Eclipse, as the original news was that the game could see a full release by this year.

Regardless of whether more information is disclosed about Star Wars Eclipse in 2024, fans have at least been provided with a glimmer of hope with the game being confirmed to still be in development. Perhaps it might be best for fans to hope that Quantic Dream will wait at least another year to release Star Wars Eclipse, as that would ultimately give the developer more time to perfect it.
