"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." may be a popular refrain among Star Wars fans, but many fans wanted to know what happened years, decades, and even centuries before the events of the first film. While the prequels brought the time of the Republic to movie screens, the time known as the High Republic was a popular setting in the expanded universe books.
These books were set in the time between 50 and 350 years before the events of the Skywalker saga and opened up new characters and stories for the writers. The setting also allows for several new Jedi to capture the hearts of readers.
10 Orla Jareni
Orla Jareni is almost like a prototype for Qui-Gon Jinn. She calls herself a "Wayseeker" and will often ignore the mandates of the Jedi Council. Much like Qui-Gon, she forges her own path and figures out her own way to serve the Force, but is still welcomed by the Council.
Orla Jareni aided the Jedi of Starlight Beacon through multiple conflicts. It was aiding Starlight Beacon from a hidden threat that ultimately ended her life. She carried a white lightsaber that was double bladed.
9 Avar Kriss
Avar Kriss o takes quite a different view of the Force than ones typically seen in Star Wars stories. She is able to create a Force network due to her view of the Force as a song. It allows her to detect others who might be Force sensitive to assist her when necessary.
She also is presented as more open-minded than the Jedi introduced during the Skywalker Saga. She forms an alliance with the Hutt to fight the Drengir. While it is a controversial alliance that is heavily criticized, she stands by it. She was also known to carry a green lightsaber.
8 Bell Zettifar
Bell Zettifar serves as a padawan to Master Loden Greatstrom. Unlike Avar Kriss, he viewed the Force as a flame. Bell believed the Force could either smolder or become an inferno.
His determination was praised, and he was viewed as thoughtful and trusting in the Force. Bell would eventually bond with a charhound and become lifelong companions. He carries a green lightsaber.
7 Sskeer
One of the few Trandoshans to be presented positively, Sskeer is a Jedi Master renowned for his wisdom and compassion. While Trandoshans are known as savage hunters, Sskeer is able to persevere through tragedy despite the negative affect it has on his relationship with the Force.
He loses his friend and fellow Jedi Master, Jora Mallie. He also is taken over by the Drengir, damaging his relationship with the Force. Still, he is able to lead his Padawan, Keeve Trennis, and teach her how to believe in herself as a Jedi Knight. Sskeer carried a blue lightsaber.
6 Keeve Trennis
Speaking of Keeve Trennis, the young Padawan was often uncertain of herself during her training, but with Skeere's help, she found peace. While struggling with self-doubt, her faith in the Force remained Resolute and that guided her journey as a Jedi.
Keeve Trennis was one of the most skilled Jedi of the High Republic with her lightsaber. She carried a green saber that had two blades, and was able to demonstrate proficiency with it in both its single and double blade forms.
5 Elzar Mann
Another Jedi with an unconventional approach to the Force was Elzar Mann. He viewed the Force as an ocean inside of him and tried to avoid repeating ways he used the Force. Elzar was a solutions-oriented Jedi and often experimented with the Force and his abilities.
Elzar Mann believed in learning as much as he could about how to use the Force to help him understand the Order. He could be clever, but was also seen as personable. He was known to carry a blue lightsaber.
4 Ty Yorrick
Ty Yorrick is another example of a Force-sensitive person forging their own path away from the Jedi Council. She joined the Jedi Order before leaving to become a mercenary and monster hunter. Yorrick continues using her Force abilities to help others even after leaving the Order.
She is authentic and still follows a lot of what fans believe to make a great Jedi, even while not being a member of the Order. She often saved other people from vicious monsters and other threats. The Order might not have been a fit for Ty Yorrick, but she avoided the pitfalls that lead to the Dark Side. She also carried a purple lightsaber years before Mace Windu.
3 Loden Greatstorm
The Twi'lek Jedi Master trained Bell Zettifar. As a teacher, he was wise and mischievous, but he was also known to be a talented pilot. Loden was always looking for the opportunity to discover something new about the Force, and he pushed his Padawan to do the same.
Loden believed that experience was the best teacher for young Jedi. His training is a reason Bell Zettifar became the Jedi he became. Loden wielded a golden yellow lightsaber.
2 Reath Silas
Reath Silas was the perfect Jedi to tackle excitement and adventure because he did not seek them. The Padawan wanted to spend his time in the Jedi Archives. He was the Jedi equivalent of a bookworm, but the Force had other plans for him.
His master sent him to the galaxy's frontier to experience life. He was able to face down any enemy or danger put in front of him. He may not have been the most adept at battle, but he used his bravery and his intelligence to beat his opponents. Reath Silas carried a green lightsaber.
1 Vernestra Rwoh
One of the youngest Jedi Knights in the expanded universe, Vernestra Rwoh passed her trials at the age of 15. At an age where most Jedi were still Padawans, she was skilled enough to advance to the next level in the Jedi Order.
After being stranded on a hostile moon, Vernestra leads her own Padawan and two other children to defeat the Nihil. She carried a purple lightsaber, but with the help of the Force, she was able to use it as a light whip.
