Following the Star Wars Battlefront 2 beta, fans accused the game's loot boxes of being pay to win. Players said that the ability to buy gameplay-affecting loot boxes was massively unfair and gave those with more disposable income a clear advantage over everyone else.

EA and developer DICE have already addressed the backlash in part, vowing to make the game more balanced. In a new article today, the companies seemed to make good on those promises, outlining the changes it is making to Star Wars Battlefront 2 loot boxes in order to "make a game that is fun for everyone."

One major change to the loot system includes removing Epic Star Cards, which are the highest tier of card available at launch, from the loot boxes. With "exception" of Special Star Cards that players can get by pre-ordering the game, or by buying deluxe or starter packs, "Star Cards will primarily be available through crafting, with the exception of special Epic Star Cards available through pre-order, deluxe, and starter packs."

Star Wars Battlefront 2 featured loot boxes before EA removed them due to backlash.

Additionally, crafting higher tier Star Cards can only be done by playing the game. This change has been made to prevent people from buying multiple loot boxes to gain crafting materials only to "immediately use them to get super powerful Star Cards." Star Wars Battlefront 2 will also lock most weapons behind "specific milestones" (a select few can be found in loot boxes) while class-specific crates will grant class-specific gear and items and can be earned by hitting milestones.

Most fans will be delighted with this news, as they were concerned that the game would not offer a level playing field. Although the video game loot box controversy has not affected sales (yet), players have been incredibly vocal. In this case, it seems that fans' stance against the game's 'pay to win' crates has succeeded. And while some would argue that they'd prefer it if loot boxes were not included in the game at all, others should be glad to see the loot box system is fairer.

But some fans will not be satisfied by this latest update about the game. Specifically, the fact that the Star Wars Battlefront 2 team says that Epic Star Cards will be the highest tier "at launch" may lead some fans to fear that far more powerful Star Cards will be introduced at some point in the game's lifecycle. In this case, could these better Star Cards be found in loot crates?

At this point, it's unclear what the future holds for the game's loot box system, as the update also notes that "this system, as well as all of the others, will be continually iterated on and improved." But fans will be hoping that whatever these future changes are, that they keep the gameplay fair.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is set to launch on November 17, 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
