A new Star Trek television series was announced Friday, with plans to broadcast the show via the CBS All Access streaming service. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be a spin-off of the previous CBS All Access show Star Trek: Discovery. It will focus on Star Trek: Discovery's Captain Pike, Number One, and Spock characters, all introduced in Discovery's second season.

Like Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will serve as a prequel to the original 1965 Star Trek series. Captain Pike serves as the USS Enterprise's first captain with his second in command, Number One, also known as Una. Spock's role on the Enterprise will be as its Science Officer.

The premise of the show is akin to that of the original Star Trek series. The trio, as well as the rest of the crew of the Enterprise, will explore new worlds across the galaxy.

For those worried that Strange New Worlds will supplant any of the other current Star Trek shows, there's no need to. Star Trek: Discovery's third season is set to air soon, Section 31 starring Michelle Yeoh's Phillipa Georgiou character is moving forward, as are Picard and an unnamed Star TrekNickelodeon cartoon.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has no currently announced release window, but will be available first on CBS All Access.
