The video game section of the Star Trek IP library is just as impressive as the television and movie category. There have been Star Trek video games almost as long as there's been a show, which says a lot about how early the trend started. Some of the first games on home computers, consoles, and even in arcades had the Star Trek brand name.

The games take their basic ideas and general design aesthetic from the franchise. There's an impressive variety that exists already, but the older games missed out on that trend. There are plenty of episodes in The Original Series that would make great games in a variety of genres.

7 "Shore Leave" — Adventure RPG

It could be an old-school point-and-click, or the devs could go isometric and make it into a game more like the ones in the Baldur's Gate franchise. The unnamed planet in the episode "Shore Leave" had unexplained properties, and manifested the desires of the visiting crew into reality.

Players can choose a certain class or race, since it's possible to be anything. Along with certain quests and adventures that involve other characters, as well as the endless possibilities for different environments and settings, the over-arching storyline could involve discovering the secret of the planet.

6 "Errand Of Mercy" — God Game

There are three main players in this plot: the Enterprise crew, the Klingons, and the Anodorians, the latter of whom inhabits the local planet. The twist is that both the Klingons and humans are fighting for control of the local region and are on the brink of war, using this planet as a front line. However, it's not until the end of the episode that they come to understand they were at the whim of the godlike Andorians the whole time.

In a game based on this story, the player would be the Andorians, controlling and manipulating certain things to stay one step ahead of both sides. The game can present opportunities to craft and build as well, making it a sandbox game.

5 "Mirror, Mirror" — Tournament Fighting Game

How can there not be a Star Trek tournament fighter? Plenty of the characters got into hand-to-hand combat, as seen in episodes like "Mirror, Mirror" or "Amok Time." But so far, the only video game that comes close is Star Trek: Invasion, which is a series of space shooter missions.

Almost every media franchise has a tournament fighting game, and the way that the human Empire organizes crew rank would make the Enterprise of the Mirror Universe an ideal setting. The ultimate prize could be control of the ship, but it could go even further of that, up to the rank of Emperor.

4 "The Galileo Seven" — Survival Game

The player takes the role of Spock on a routine mission with an away team, but during the landing, something goes wrong. The challenge is to survive for a certain amount of time despite limited resources, hostile local fauna, and harsh environmental conditions.

There was a sub-plot in "The Galileo Seven" that placed an impatient ambassador and a time-sensitive delivery on the Enterprise, limiting their ability to help the lost crew members, which could be another factor in the game. Spock turned to an unconventional and uncharacteristic method of contacting the Enterprise, a risk that ultimately saved them. A similar solution could be integrated into the gameplay.

3 "The Tholian Web" — Mystery Or Puzzle Game

Two mysteries are integrated into this episode; the issue of space fractures and USS Defiant, and the puzzle of the mysterious Tholian race and their reticence to trust the Federation. Players can take on the role of Commander Spock as he tries to not only unravel these mysteries, but maintain good terms with the angry locals.

"The Tholian Web" includes a few plot devices used throughout the Star Trek universe, such as the concept of alternate realities and the Mirror Universe. Players could also take on the character of Kirk as he tries to contact the Enterprise.

2 "The Enterprise Incident" — Stealth RPG

"The Enterprise Incident" is about the officers Spock and Kirk going undercover to infiltrate a Romulan ship and steal their secrets. A mystery game, a puzzle game, or anything based on espionage as opposed to combat would make a great fit for the plot of this episode.

The player can take on either the role of Spock or Kirk, or maybe both characters if the plot is organized for it. Some backstory or exposition about the history of espionage between the Federation and the Romulan Empire could also be included. Another interesting option would be to flip the whole story, and play it from the Romulan point of view.

1 "The Corbomite Manuever" — RTS Game

TOS-S1E10-The Corbomite Manuever

Space is dangerous for several reasons, and sometimes it's only a question of unlucky encounters and failed diplomacy that destroys a starship. Players would take the role of captain and attempt to navigate the ship safely around an unknown part of the galaxy, thinking or fighting their way out of any problems that arise.

Most of the time, it's mind over matter in the far reaches of space. The same would be true for a game based on this episode. Another interesting premise is a game of the same type from the point of view of the main antagonist Balok as he tries to protect his corner of space.
