With a current resurgence, a lot of familiar faces from Star Trek are returning with new actors. Star Trek, a series almost 60 years old, has captured the hearts and minds of many fans for generations. Star Trek deals with great topics, whilst remaining a great piece of sci-fi entertainment, boldly going where no one has gone before.
In recent years, Star Trek has seen characters appear and cameo with shows like Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. With Captain Pike, Spock, and even James T. Kirk returning, many may wonder what characters from Star Trek: The Original Series, deserve to be brought back into the new age of content.
8 Hikaru Sulu
Sulu served as a Starfleet officer during the latter half of the 23rd century. He has served on three different Federation starships, with the most renowned and popular being that of the USS Enterprise. Aboard the Enterprise, Sulu encountered a great number of mysteries and action as a member of Starfleet, and one of the main cast members of Star Trek: The Original Series.
So far, Hikaru Sulu is yet to return but has been seen in the new cinematic timeline with a rebooted cast and crew. Sulu deserves to be brought back, not only for his ability to fence but for his charisma with other crew members.
7 Charles Evans
In one of the earliest episodes of Star Trek, Charlie X provided audiences with a mix between sci-fi and supernatural flair to the episode’s villain. Charles “Charlie” Evans was a human male civilian, who became empowered with a range of extraordinary abilities. Charles failed to control his power for good and gave in to ultimate power.
Having been raised by an alien species called the Tahsians, Charles has gaps in his knowledge, as well as a great immaturity when aboard the USS Enterprise. Charles would fit perfectly in the themes of Strange New Worlds.
6 Janice Rand
Joining the USS Enterprise in its five-year mission, Janice Rand began her service to Starfleet in the operations division under Captain James T. Kirk. Janice Rand had a few run-ins on the Enterprise with crew members and alien species, due to her beauty, but this never got in the way of Janice’s ambition or strength.
To see Janice return to Star Trek would be a great addition to the franchise, considering her popularity, and the potential for new stories of this new and revamped character.
5 Montgomery Scott
Often referred to as “Scotty”, Montgomery Scott was the chief engineer on the USS Enterprise. Scotty has had quite the career and was revived in Star Trek: The Next Generation for an episode. There’s a great charm to Scotty, one who proves himself as a miracle worker with superior technical and engineering skills, experience, and ingenuity.
Montgomery Scott is just what the new era of Star Trek needs. He’s funny, charming, and puts the safety of his crew above all else. Scotty is a very popular Star Trek character, so his involvement in the series’ future is inevitable, as it should be, considering he’s one of the best characters from The Original Series.
4 Harry Mudd
Harcourt Fenton Mudd, also known as Harry Mudd, is a reoccurring character in The Original Series. He’s noted for being a con artist, smuggler, swindler, and all-around creative fiend in the Star Trek universe during the mid-23rd century. Harry Mudd spent a few episodes being a nuisance to the USS Enterprise crew, indulging in his love for women and finance.
Harry Mudd returned to the Star Trek universe with Star Trek: Discovery but has not been seen since. Considering Harry Mudd is a fun character, who deserves his focused episodes. Star Trek is no stranger to reoccurring episodes, like Reginald Barclay from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
3 Pavelov Chekov
Another character in Star Trek that has yet to be given the recast treatment for a new age is Pavelov Chekov. Born in Russia, Chekov proceeded to have a successful career in Starfleet as an officer during the latter half of the 23rd century. Chekov mainly served as the navigator aboard the USS Enterprise but had the skills and experience to play a more variable role than the other senior staff members and crew of the Enterprise.
Chekov was one of the youngest members aboard the USS Enterprise, as he was 22 under his first assignment whilst on Captain James T. Kirk’s five-year mission. The new Star Trek series could flesh out Chekov, and show audiences his development as a young and ambitious Starfleet junior officer.
2 Talosians
The Talosians are an aged, sentient, telepathic humanoid species that are noted for being the first aliens to be created for Star Trek: The Original Series pilot episode. They are natives of Talos 4 and are noted for their large craniums, which are assumed, to store their great and powerful minds. Talosians are often observers and testers of Starfleet.
The Talosians have a destiny entwined with Captain Pike. Considering Pike is the protagonist of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, it would not be a surprise to see these aliens that originated from The Original Series, once again return to the series.
1 Leonard McCoy
Leonard McCoy was a Starfleet officer during both the 23rd and the 24th centuries. McCoy had a great career and even gave the newest Enterprise for Star Trek: The Next Generation an examination. His specialty lies in not just his incredible wit, but his accomplishments as a surgeon, physician, psychologist, and exobiologist.
McCoy was the chief medical officer aboard the USS Enterprise and saved plenty of lives that were under his care, including his good friend Captain James T. Kirk. His good friend, Kirk, would often call him “Bones”, and had a friendly rivalry with Spock. To see these three again in a new age would be the pleasure of many fans.
