Paramount is finally making strides with its new Star Trek movie and has brought in acclaimed filmmaker Simon Kinberg to help bring the project to life. Initially, it was revealed that Toby Haynes would be helming the project, but since then, there hasn’t been any major update regarding the title.

In January 2024, it was announced that Paramount was working on a Star Trek film that would take the franchise into a new direction. At the time, Haynes had been chosen to direct the film, with Seth Grahame-Smith slated to write the script. However, things went silent after the announcement and once again, fans didn’t know if they would ever be able to see another Star Trek film on the big screen or not. Now, a recent report has indicated that Paramount is finally moving ahead with the project and has roped in a big name to elevate the project.

Star Trek Actor Believes Fourth Movie In The Franchise Might Finally Be Happening

One Star Trek actor is still hopeful that the fourth film in the franchise might happen soon and the original cast might return too.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the production giant is in negotiations with Kinberg to produce a Star Trek feature film for the big screen. If everything works out well, the filmmaker could take on creative roles in other films of the storied franchise. The report also mentioned that the project will be set decades before the events of the JJ Abrams movie that was released in 2009. Additionally, it might primarily focus on the formation of the Starfleet and humanity’s first contact with alien life. However, the report also made it clear that the project was already in active development at Paramount and Kinberg would be joining in to work on it. As of now, there is no change to the movie crew. Haynes will still direct, Grahame-Smith will write the script, and Abrams will produce, just like it was announced in January.

Chris Pine in one of the Star Trek movies

This movie isn't connected to the previously planned Star Trek sequel that had been on hold for a while. That sequel was supposed to be the fourth movie in the new series and bring back most of the original cast, including Chris Pine as Captain Kirk. Unfortunately, there's no news on when that movie might happen. Recently, Pine opened up about the film’s future and gave an uninspiring update about it. In a recent interview, Pine said that he had no idea what’s happening with the alleged fourth film in the Star Trek franchise. He said, “I thought there was already a script, but I guess I was wrong, or they decided to pivot. As it's always been with Trek, I just wait and see.”

The news of Kinberg attached to the new Star Trek project is encouraging and should serve as a sigh of relief among the fandom. It would be interesting to see how the makers would explore a new era in Star Trek history, potentially showing the early days of human and Volcan cooperation. Also, it would give fans a chance to dive deeper into events that were not seen before, offering a chance for new narratives and challenges. However, it would also bring a lot of challenges because fans might not want to see a project that doesn’t exist in existing timelines. Nonetheless, the news of a prequel film has definitely made fans excited.

All films in the Star Trek franchise are available for streaming on Paramount+.
