Star Citizen has become famous for the sheer scale of developer Cloud Imperium Games’ ambitions (plus the hundreds of millions it’s made in crowdfunding), and infamous for the years of feature creep and inconsistent dev communication that have left many players wondering if the space sim MMO will ever be fully released. It remains to be seen if Star Citizen is more than a pipe dream, but players have plenty of new content to dive into while they wait.

This week marks the eighth anniversary of Star Citizen’s unveiling, and to celebrate, CIG has launched a new alpha build, known as Alpha 3.11: High Impact. This new update adds three new starter ships, the Origin 100 series. CIG says these new ships will be the first to feature more physicalized dashboards, meaning players will be able to interact with every button and switch in the cockpit.

The High Impact update also removes Armistice Zones from a selection of the game’s space stations, which increases the number of areas in Star Citizen where players can engage in space combat with one another. This change is accompanied by others like new force reactions and weapons, expanded prison gameplay, improved planetary art, and an updated inventory UI.

CIG also teased a new look at the game’s long-delayed single-player campaign, Squadron 42. This comes courtesy of a new trailer that offers a brief glimpse of the Aciedo Space Station, one of the campaign’s first key locations, which the developer will show more of this Saturday, October 10. In the meantime, CIG is hosting an in-game Halloween event known as “Day of the Vara.” From now until October 31, players can earn holiday-themed helmets, apply for an event-themed paintjob for the Cutlass, and even take part in community pumpkin-carving and cosplay competitions.

Star Citizen is in development for PC.
