One of the most popular shows on Netflix is coming back for a second season. It turns out that the Squid Game creators are indeed planning for a second season, though that development is in the very early stages.
Squid Game exploded onto Netflix earlier this fall and took the streaming service by storm. The premise of the Korean show is that contestants compete in what are traditionally children's games, including the titular game. However, when players lose these games, they also lose their lives. There's an extra layer of drama added to Squid Game due to the fact that the contestants tended to be destitute and desperate to win the money the contest offered.
Since the series came to its conclusion on Netflix, there have been questions about whether a second season might be in the works. In a video posted to its official Twitter account, the Associated Press answered that question. In the video, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director, creator, and writer said that yes, Squid Game will get a second season. In the video, Dong-hyuk made it clear that there was so much pressure and so many people asking for a return to the show's world that he felt as though he was really left with no choice.
There is a bit of a caveat in that it doesn't appear as if the series will make a return anytime soon. The man behind Netflix's Squid Game said that he's got some ideas in his head but nothing has been put to paper. That of course means that shooting hasn't even been hinted at beginning yet. Even he said it was still far too early in the process to really say what is going to happen in season 2. He did promise that viewers who fell in love with the series will get to see more Gi-hun adventures.
Squid Game's popularity was big enough that it even surprised some of the people behind it, as well as the streaming giant. The show has now grown beyond Netflix and its references and memes have entered into other aspects of everyday life.
It should come as no surprise that the loyal fanbase has led to there actually being a Squid Game video game being in production. The question now is whether or not season 2 of the surprise hit show or the video game adaptation will eventually arrive first.
