Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has finally been revealed, and one thing that has received a lot of praise is its character designs. Outside of Star-Lord, there have been virtually no complaints about how the heroes look, with many instead having praise for their designs. As for their personalities, they seem to be taken straight from the films, ensuring that those that fell in love with the characters because of the MCU will be satisfied.

While Eidos Montreal is looking to the comic books when it comes to certain characters, particularly Gamora, it is clearly doubling down on what the MCU did with others. There is no better example than Rocket Raccoon, as the character takes on the appearance of his MCU counterpart. With only some minor tweaks seen, the scheming criminal looks just like fans would expect, and his personality follows suit. As such, when comparing the Rocket Raccoon in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy to the MCU’s version, fans should have no problem noticing the similarities.

Rocket Raccoon’s Character Design In The Guardians of the Galaxy Game And MCU Movies

The most noticeable thing about Rocket Raccoon’s design is undoubtedly his goatee. The only discernible thing about this version and the MCU character’s appearance, the goatee makes Rocket look just like the space pirate that he is. It fits his personality well, and it gives a somewhat distinguished look to his overall appearance. It is also shaped like Groot, something that can only be noticed when looking at a close-up image of the character. A terrific detail that reflects the pairing’s bond, it is clear that Eidos Montreal is doubling down on their partnership.

Outside of Rocket’s Groot-shaped beard and a pair of goggles on top of his head, Eidos Montreal’s version of the character looks as if he was pulled right from the movie. His orange armor set looks like Rocket’s from the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, while the weapon he wields is just as bulky as some of the guns he pulls out in the movie. While he does not sound exactly the same as Bradley Cooper’s Rocket, there is a similar aggression, gruffness, and accent in the character’s voice. With the movies nailing Rocket’s design, pulling from it so much when designing him for the game makes sense.

Rocket Raccoon’s Personality In The Guardians of the Galaxy Game And MCU Movies

Fans can get plenty of insight into Rocket’s attitude from the Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy gameplay demo that was shown at E3, and it should please anyone that is familiar with the character. He has the same, aggressive attitude when things go wrong, shouting at Star Lord and the other Guardians when he is tossed across a large gap. He’s also an opportunist and a criminal first, as shown when he suggests to sell Gamora’s things at the start of the trailer. His laughter during battle is straight out of the MCU as well. All of this lines up with who he is in the movies, and in turn matches his comic book counterpart.

One interesting mention sees him talking about how he has “faced plenty of hardship,” something that could be a nod to his tragic backstory. Made in a lab through a painful process and forced to watch the love of his life die, Rocket had a rough origin story, and it could be mentioned in the game. While it has been seen via Telltale’s Guardians of the Galaxy game, Rocket’s backstory has not been explicitly mentioned in the films. As such, a deeper look at his past could help set the game apart.

The final thing to note about Rocket’s personality is that he is even more protective of Groot than he is in the films. While this does show in the movies, as Rocket is somewhat of a father figure to the tree-creature, he also trusts Groot more to do things on his own. This version of Rocket seems terrified of Groot being in danger, which is shown by his many attempts to be sold in place of Groot during the gameplay demo. While this does make him similar to the MCU version, his love for Groot seems to be dialed up even more in the game. Overall, players are going to be looking at a Rocket Raccoon that is just like the movie version, though that is hardly a bad thing.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy will release on October 26, 2021, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
