According to a new rumor that's been gaining traction online, a new Spyro video game called Spyro 4: Mystery of the Dragon could be in development, but fans shouldn't get their hopes up just yet. The original Spyro the Dragon trilogy on the PS1 are considered classics of the 3D platformer genre, though the later games weren't nearly as well-received.

Following Insomniac's Spyro the Dragon trilogy on PS1, the 3D platformer franchise went off the rails a bit. The later Spyro games certainly have their friends, but they weren't nearly as successful as Spyro's original adventures. The Spyro brand was eventually used to help launch the toys-to-life Skylanders franchise, and then went it dormant until 2018's Spyro Reignited Trilogy remade the original games with vastly improved graphics.

With Activision eventually following up Crash N. Sane Trilogy with Crash Bandicoot 4, many fans have been hoping to see Spyro Reignited Trilogy followed up by a brand-new Spyro the Dragon game. Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot 4 developer Toys for Bob being assigned to assist on Call of Duty games has largely dashed hope that Spyro could make a comeback, but a new rumor claims that a new game in the series is indeed in development. Apparently called Spyro 4: Mystery of the Dragon, the supposed leaker went to the Gaming Leaks and Rumors subreddit to make the bold claim that the new game would have an announcement trailer as early as October 5.

Now, Spyro the Dragon fans should obviously take this information with a massive grain of salt. There is no evidence proving the claims are accurate, and the moderators on the forum have gone as far as to label the claim "False." However, accurate leaks have come from the Gaming Leaks and Rumors subreddit, and since the game is supposedly going to be revealed on October 5, fans don't have to wait long at all to find out if there's any truth to these rumors or not.

If the leak is true, then it seems Spyro 4's reveal trailer will be followed up by weekly developer diary videos, with plans to launch the game on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X in Q4 2024. The game will not have the combat from the divisive Legend of Spyro games, but will supposedly feature Legend of Spyro character Cynder as a playable character in what is described as a Ratchet & Clank multiverse scenario. Many fans have taken the claim that Cynder will be in the game as the biggest indication that this "leak" is fake, along with the idea that it would be announced a year in advance and promoted with weekly developer videos. The leaker also claims that Elora, Hunter, Moneybags, Professor, Ripto, Crush, and Gulp will be making their return in Spyro 4, while the characters Sheila, Sgt. Bird, Bentley, and Agent 9 will not be in the new game.

Again, fans should treat this supposed leak with a great deal of skepticism. There is no evidence backing up the claims and the user has since deleted their Reddit account. But with October 5 right around the corner, at least this "leak" will either be proven true or debunked in a matter of days. Regardless if this leak is real, the reaction to it online makes it clear that there are many fans interested in seeing a new Spyro game, so hopefully Activision takes notice.
