The unusual Forger family have certainly gotten themselves into quite a sticky situation throughout the course of the Spy x Family story so far. Super spy "Twilight" (AKA "Loid Forger") has assembled the perfect cover family to complete his latest mission, even more miraculously with willing participants to be his wife and daughter. With Loid, Yor, and Anya harboring their own secrets and motives for being a part of the Forgers, it is truly a spectacle to watch. However, the antics of the Forgers are not carried out alone. The sole person in on Twilights spy persona is the hilarious Franky Franklin, the "Man with the Square Face".
Tatsuya Endo's manga and anime follows Loid, Yor and Anya Forger as they juggle being a part of this fake family and keeping their hidden motives for joining a secret. Loid is a spy who needs a cover to infiltrate a school, Yor is an assassin who needs to create the impression that she is married to throw suspicions off her, and Anya is a telepath who knows both these things through her telepathic abilities which she keeps a secret to stay in the family. This chaotic dynamic is the golden thread throughout Agent Twilight's journey towards completing his mission.
Twilight and Franky
When Twilight was a young boy, he always wanted to join the army with his friends. They would pretend to fight Ostanian soldiers and make their country of Westalis proud. After all the adults in Twilight's life telling him that war will not happen, Ostania launched a surprise attack on Westalis. Its aftermath causing millions to die, including Twilight's family. With nothing left in the world that he loved and fueled by anger, Twilight joined the Westalis army as a teenager. It was here that he met Franky for the first time.
On a mission, Twilight heard someone huffing and puffing in the woods. He reacted to this by shooting at the sound, only to find that the noise was coming from Franky, who begged him not to shoot. Franky was a deserter from the Ostanian army. He believed that war was pointless, in contradiction to Twilight's view. Twilight saw the Ostanians as the cause of the war and the reason his loved ones died, Franky held the exact same experience, but to him Westalis started the war. As Twilight was about to shoot Franky, they were intercepted by the Ostanian army's fire and Franky got away.
Now as work colleagues and friends, Franky cares a lot about Twilight's success in Operation Strix. He disguises as a woman to test if he could pose as Twilight's wife, investigates Anya as well as other things to help the mission succeed. Most notably, he pretends to be a villain that play-kidnaps Anya to be rescued by Twilight in a make-believe game to celebrate her acceptance to Eden Academy.
Franky's Employment at W.I.S.E
Twilight and Franky work for the Westalis Intelligence Service, or W.I.S.E. The organization recruited Twilight as a soldier based on his talent as a fighter. After rigorous training and testing, he became a spy for the organization. His missions would be assigned to him by Sylvia Sherwood in different unique ways. The tools and gadgets Twilight needs for his missions are made by Franky, who communicates with Twilight under the front of a tobacco shop, where he also feeds him intel for his missions as an informant.
Franky's Gadgets
Franky is skilled at inventing tools necessary for W.I.S.E's missions, and he loves what he does. This is evident prominently in chapter 43 of the manga. Franky and Yor go searching for a missing cat that belongs to a woman that Frankyis crushing on lately. In order to find Mr. Kopi, Franky whips out some listening devices he made, which he then plants all over the city in cat-concentrated areas. He fitted the devices with sensors that react to the bell on Kopi's collar.
When those did not work, he brought out the Cat Nearness Inducement Prototype ("CAT-N.I.P") Decoy System. This little invention will disperse the scent of catnip, which will lure Kopi to the device and Franky. His most powerful invention, however, is his Exo-Skeleton Power Suit weapon. The suit took him ten years to make and bestows superhuman abilities on the wearer. Franky tells Yor that he always dreamed of bettering the world with his inventions. Admittedly, he also hoped the patents from his creations will make him rich.
More Than Just Comic Relief
While Spy x Family is certainly bountiful of humor from all characters, Franky is one of the leading comic reliefs in the anime. However, this does not mean that this is all he is. He knows the underbelly of the world that he and Twilight are a part of. Franky is a trusted confidant to Twilight throughout the anime, and also provides pearls of wisdom occasionally. He advises him to never trust anyone, because it's the only way men like them survive in this world. He cares deeply for those close to him, and it shows, while also being incredibly funny.
