The following contains spoilers for Episode 2 of Spy x Family Season 2, "Bond's Strategy to Stay Alive/Damian's Field Research Trip," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

The second episode of Spy x Familyimmediately dives right into wholesomeness concerning two of the many side characters in the series. The first part follows Bond as he tries to get Loid to come home early, while the second part follows Damian and his friends as he is forced to take a day off from studying.

While both parts might seem a bit inessential, they do a great job of giving us more insight into characters that don't necessarily get a lot of chances to shine. In addition, Damian's part in particular gives viewers a lot to sympathize with as he tries his best to live up to his father's expectations. Ultimately, while this episode isn't vital to the overall storyline, it's still a great watch for fans.

After pondering possible causes, Bond suddenly comes upon the possibility that he'll be killed soon. Bond tries to tell Anya, but she ignores him because she is busy with homework. Yor then tells Bond that she forgot to buy him any dog food, and since Loid is coming home late tonight, she'll have to be the one to make his dinner tonight. Bond realizes that this is the reason for his coming death, but is too afraid of Yor to even consider refusing to eat her food. He almost resigns himself to his fate until he realizes that if he can get Loid to come home early, he'll make dinner for Bond, saving his life in the process.

Bond immediately bursts out onto the street to look for Loid. However, he has no idea where Loid is or what he does, so he ends up wandering the city, which is rife with distractions and obstacles that get in his way. As the afternoon gives way to night, Bond finally finds Loid as he prepares to infiltrate a pharmaceutical company in order to obtain a sample of truth serum. Loid is surprised to see Bond here, but assumes he came to get revenge for being experimented on and has him lead him into the lab. However, as Loid searches for the serum, Bond gets another vision of the researchers returning, and quickly warns him.

When the researchers enter the lab, all they see is a note declaring that the serum has been stolen, but when they open the safe to check, the serum is still there. Loid and Bond then jump out and ambush the researchers, knocking them out and taking the serum with no problems. His job finished, Loid is able to go home early after all, and Bond confirms the success of his own mission with a new premonition showing him eating a delicious meal made by Loid.

The Value Of A Day Off

Spy x Family S2 E2 Damian and Friends rowing

Due to having overslept, Damian is forced to help the Dorm Mother with chores. His friends Emile and Ewin know that he overslept because he was up late studying, and worry that he's pushing himself too hard. The two decide to flout the rules openly so that they can help him with the chores, and Henderson, taking pity on them, allows them to do so. Emile and Ewin help Damian relax a little bit, but he still feels anxious about getting back to work. Henderson decides to create another excuse for Damian to relax by pretending to punish him, and sends him on a field research trip with Mr. Green.

After a fierce kayaking trip where the boys freak out after falling into waist-deep water, they make a fire to warm up and start prepping to catch some fish. After finding some bait and making a fishing rod, the boys eventually catch some fish and eat them by the riverside. Though he has been having fun, Damian feels guilty about the fact that he isn't studying as he resolved to. Mr. Green tells him that relaxation is just as important for the mind, and that spacing out can also help people's brains grow. After dinner, Mr. Green takes the boys out to Stella Lake, where the trio are greeted by an amazing sight. When Mr. Green asks Damian if he thinks today has been a waste of time, Damian admits that it hasn't been.

While both stories are largely disconnected, they both have to do with the value of life (with Bond's story being a bit more literal about it than Damian's). The lesson Damian learns at the end of his story is that while having goals is important, it's also important not to neglect the other aspects of life that make living worth it. It's a wholesome little episode that reminds fans that Spy x Family is more than just a comedy, and that it does have its heartwarming moments as well.
